This publication, itself a reversed object, retraces Tarek Atoui?s multidisciplinary interventions, events, concerts, and workshops that condensed into 'The Reverse Sessions', a project that unfolded in three stages at the Dahlem Museum during the last Berlin Biennale, and at kurimanzutto in Mexico City. 'The Reverse Sessions' followed the genesis of sound making, from museum objects not intended to be played (Dahlem Sessions), to scores composed after those sounds, to instruments created to perform those very scores. Over the summer of 2016, Atoui?s makeshift instruments were activated again at Tate Modern, for 'The Reverse Collection'.00Lebanese-born sound artist Tarek Atoui is known for his exploration of performance as a complex, open, and dynamic process. His ongoing reflections on the notion of the musical instrument have led him to investigate the history of classical Arab music and to collaborate with a school for the deaf to learn how students hear and perceive sound. By traversing such a wide range of fields, he constantly changes roles, shifting from performer to computer programmer, from researcher to artistic director.

What's hot and what will be hot in contemporary art in Italy. This book explores various aspects of art in Italy from 2000 through 2010: production centers, benchmark exhibitions, the major artistic developments that often contributed to extending if not shifting the domains of art, and the leading Italian artists in recent generations. The story is mainly told through images. In the first part of the book, they describe the more vital energies in artistic culture in Italy. The second part is devoted instead to the analysis of the work of sixty artists who have emerged during the last ten years or have in some way shaped and informed the development of art through their work. The Quadriennale di Roma has selected some of the most brilliant young curators in Italy as contributors: Laura Barreca, Andrea Lissoni, Luca Lo Pinto, and Costanza Paissan. The choice reflects a vision that starts from the phenomena that affected the production of art in Italy in recent years, and then moves on to the individual artists.
Philippe Parreno
Philippe Parreno is a leading French artist who works across film, video, sound, sculpture, performance and information technology. His work explores the borders between reality and fiction, and he sees his exhibitions as choreographed spaces that follow a score, during which a series of different events unfold. These kaleidoscopic environments redefine the gallery-going experience. Having collaborated with many visual artists as well as musicians, architects, scientists and writers, Parreno continues the tradition of the avant-garde artist engaged with many cultural disciplines. Created in collaboration with the artist, the book features a fully illustrated survey of Parreno's life and work and an interview with curator Andrea Lissoni. Exploring the artistic processes involved in creating his work, it includes photographs of Parreno's new installation that is exhibited in the Turbine Hall for this exhibition.
Bruce Nauman

Philippe Parreno is interested more in the dynamics of how a work of art is shown to the public than in its actual production, and in his films, installations, performances and texts, he subverts the codes normally applied to exhibition spaces. An alternative history of "environments" how women artists from Lygia Clark to Judy Chicago redefined installation, featuring reconstructions of destroyed works "Environments" was a term coined by Lucio Fontana in 1949 to describe installations at the intersection of art and architecture that emphasized audience participation. To date, art history has tended to focus on the works of male artists mostly from the US and Europe. Inside Other Spaces offers a different narrative, highlighting the contributions of women artists to the field. It features 14 pioneering women artists from three generations, spanning Asia, Europe and the Americas, including Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Aleksandra Kasuba, Lea Lublin, Marta Minujín, Tania Mouraud, Maria Nordman, Nanda Vigo, Faith Wilding and Tsuruko Yamazaki. Given the experimental nature of these works, many of them were deconstructed or destroyed immediately after being exhibited. This is the first project to reconstruct them with the help of conservators using archival material and heterogeneous sources such as photographs, architectural plans and lists of materials.
Pan Daijing: Mute
Pan Daijing devises performances and exhibitions as Gesamtkunstwerke, total works of art in which architectural intervention, light, sound, and movement interact to tell stories that go beyond language. Her haunting compositions for voice and electronic instruments combine opera and noise music. Mute-in which the artist and composer examines silence and liveness-is Pan's biggest solo exhibition to date. This monograph is published in conjunction with the exhibition and in collaboration with Tai Kwun Contemporary is the first comprehensive presentation of Pan's work in the dynamic zone straddling music and visual art. Pan Daijing, b. 1991 in Guiyang, China, lives as an artist and composer in Berlin. She is one of the winners of the prestigious Preis der Nationalgalerie 2024. Sarah Johanna Theurer, b. 1988, is a curator, whose focus is on time-based arts and techno-social entanglements. She is currently working in the Haus der Kunst in Munich.
