Andrea Lugli Presents Creative Impulse No 6

  • Categories: Art

Creative Impulse brings together a multitude of graphic designers and artists such as Sagmeister and Nofrontiere who have their own rhythms and their own obsessions. In the final analysis a designer inevitably brings into play a conceptual awareness that compels reflection. So a voyage through his elective affinities also becomes a form of methodological recognition - a kind of Bildungsroman transformed into visual. This aspect is obvious from the book's inclusion of the sketchbooks and formal/design notes: they record the moments in which an intuition takes shape. The magical moment in design: giving shape to an idea.

Black and White Graphics

Black and white are not colors, but a philosophy. In the words of designer Fons Hickman “There is nothing more multifaceted than black and white, the rest is merely colorful.” And a list of contemporary designers gives credence to this statement with visuals that powerfully portray the tension of figure versus ground. Why would a designer chose to limit her pallette to one color? Designers and firms such as Jennifer Sterling, Ed Fella, Stefan Sagmeister, Plazm, Tomato, Planet Pixel and Shepard Fairey answer this question with explosive results. A diverse selection of works including Dean Karr’s dark and disturbing art direction and photography for Marilyn Manson, Stephen Farrell’s beautifully conceived book design and the graphic novel stylings of Benjamin Güdel boldly illustrate the power of black and white. -- Text from Ginkopress (see link).

Handmade

  • Categories: Art

In an age of uninspired corporate design and ominous "viral marketing," this book takes a fresh look at the world's current production of "analogue design". It is an international survey of the best examples created in recent times and draws on many influences from punk rock and cartoons to hand-painted street signs and graffiti. Handmade takes a refreshingly new, organic approach to this subject and exposes the appeal of its aesthetic power. Contributors range from young emerging artists to seasoned practitioners and include Matthias Gephart, Insect, Yuko Shimizu, Fawn Gehweiler, Fafi, Skwak, Sfaustina, Tokidoki, Melina Rodrigo, Yomar Augusto, Rinzen, Marok, Mike Giant, John John Jesse, WK Interact, Jasper Goodall, Charles Wilkin, Dave Kinsey, Shepard Fairey, and Chris Ashworth. Designers include Ed Fella, Plazm, Why Not Associates and Stefan Sagmeister.

Modern Technologies for Landslide Investigation and Prediction presents eleven contributed chapters from Chinese and Italian authors, as a follow-up of a bilateral workshop held in Shanghai on September 2013. Chapters are organized in three main parts: ground-based monitoring techniques (photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning, ground-based InSAR, infrared thermography, and GNSS networks), geophysical (passive seismic sensor networks) and geotechnical methods (SPH and SLIDE), and satellite remote-sensing techniques (InSAR and optical images). Authors of these contributes are internationally-recognized experts in their respective research fields. Marco Scaioni works in the college of Surveying and Geo-Informatics at Tongji University, Shanghai (P.R. China). His research fields are mainly Close-range Photogrammetry, Terrestrial Laser Scanning, and other ground-based sensors for metrological and deformation monitoring applications to structural engineering and geosciences. In the period 2012-2016 he is chairman of the Working Group V/3 in the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, focusing on ‘Terrestrial 3D Imaging and Sensors’.

Bacteriophages

This volume provides detailed protocols for the isolation, enumeration, characterization of diverse bacteriophages, including both small and jumbo bacteriophages, from soil, fecal, municipal wastewater, and from food niche samples. Chapters highlight the diversity of bacteriophages in different environments, quantifications using culture and molecular techniques, protocols for isolation, interaction of bacteriophage proteins with host cells, and how to use bacteriophages to transfer foreign genetic elements to bacterial strains. In addition to the above, chapters feature the application of bacteriophages/bacteriophage-derived products. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips (in the Notes section) on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Bacteriophages: Methods and Protocols aims to ensure successful results in further study of this vital field.

Herbs and Spices

This edited volume, “Herbs and Spices”, is a collection of reviewed and relevant research chapters, offering a comprehensive overview of recent developments in the field of agricultural and biological sciences. The book comprises single chapters authored by various researchers and edited by an expert active in the medical research area. All chapters are complete in itself but united under a common research study topic. This publication aims at providing a thorough overview of the latest research efforts by international authors on herbs and spices, and opening new possible research paths for further novel developments.

Bifidobacteria and Their Role in the Human Gut Microbiota. 2nd Edition

The human intestine is home of an almost inconceivable large number of microorganisms. The human gut microbiota can therefore be pictured as an organ placed within a host organism. The human gut microbiome, which in total may contain >100 times the number of genes present in our genome, endows us with functional features that we did not have to evolve ourselves. It is recognized that intestinal microbiota plays an important role in human health and disease. In fact, gut bacteria other than metabolize dietary components, may play complex roles such as modulation of the immune system and in reduction of gut infections. Variations in the presence and/or abundance of certain components of the in...

Sourdough fermentation was probably one of the first microbial processes employed by mankind for the production and preservation of food. This practice is still widely used worldwide due to the distinct sensorial and health properties attributed to these products. Traditional sourdough bread is achieved by spontaneous fermentations, leading to natural selections of microorganisms (mainly yeast and lactic acid bacteria) with health benefits for the consumers’ microbiota. However, multiple opportunities are currently underexploited through the entire sourdough value chain. Sourdough Innovations: Novel Uses of Metabolites, Enzymes, and Microbiota from Sourdough Processing summarizes the lates...

The highly acclaimed illustrative art of Eric Feng, aka Feric, is collected here for the first time ever, revealing his surreal and beautiful art blending East and West, past and present, natural and mechanical. Hovering between fantasy and reality, Fevolution is about evolutionary possibilities. Feric's translucent layers provide a window on both the clarity and complexity hidden below the surface of his hybrid creations.
