Indigenous breadsellers riot over a Spanish monopoly scheme; Spanish authorities plan to remove native people from the city; indigenous people struggle to construct a splendid church; the city's inhabitants fight over elections and witness hangings, epidemics, and eclipses. All this and more a Native American writer of Puebla, Mexico, reported in the late seventeenth century in a set of annals in his own language, Nahuatl, telling his people's local history from the coming of the Christian faith down to his own day. These records were part of a corpus of such annals produced in the Tlaxcala-Puebla region during this period. These writings by native peoples for their own posterity provide the most direct access to the indigenous perspective on the postconquest centuries that we are ever going to find. Here in This Year for the first time brings two sets of Nahuatl annals—the other one being from a more provincial locale—to the English-speaking world, presenting the original Nahuatl with facing, very readable translations.
A Troubled Marriage

Lines and Circles
For over a year and a half, Santa Fe, New Mexico's Poet Laureate, 2008-2010, Valerie Martínez worked closely with three generations of eleven Santa Fe families in the creation of unique works of art and poetry. The project and exhibition, entitled "Lines and Circles: A Celebration of Santa Fe Families," encouraged positive relationships within and between families, promoted meaningful community dialogue, and generated a body of art and poetry that commemorates family life in Santa Fe. This book documents the project and the families, celebrating art at the heart of community life. Ms. Martínez says, "This project was a labor of family and community love more than anything else. The "Lines and Circles" families will tell you that in addition to creating important family works of art that will stay with them for generations, they have come together, even more meaningfully, as families. Violence in the Media and Its Influence on Criminal Defense
How much are today's youth actually influenced by violence in the media? People who would never dispute the positive influence of programs like Sesame Street are reluctant to acknowledge that other programming may do harm. As early as the 1930s, however, parents were expressing concerns about the content of various media, including radio and comic books. Today, almost every violent crime perpetrated by a young person is probed for evidence of media influence, often while other contributing factors are ignored. With an in-depth look at media violence and its possible influence on young viewers, this book examines how the "media made me do it" defense has affected today's courtrooms. Highly publicized cases such as those of Lionel Tate and Joshua Cooke, both of whom used media influence (television wrestling and The Matrix, respectively) as part of their defense, are discussed in detail.
