The publication of this fully updated edition of A Dictionary of Genetics coincides with the hundredth anniversary of the introduction of the term genetics by William Bateson in 1906 at the Third International Conference on Genetics. Since then genetics has made tremendous advances in knowledge and technique and now occupies a pivotal position in the life sciences as the most powerful means for probing fundamental questions in cell biology, development, and evolution. The determination of sequences of complete genomes, the study of gene expression and genetic variation on a global scale, and the ability to rapidly amplify gene sequences and to achieve targeted gene disruptions are just some ...

Research Methods in Consumer Law

Consumer law is worthy of greater academic attention at a time when many new questions arise and old ones need new answers. This unique handbook takes the reader on a journey through existing literature, research questions and methods. It builds on the state of the art to offer a springboard for jumping to the heart of contemporary issues and equips researchers with a starter’s kit to weave together rich traditions, ranging from socio-economics to behavioural analysis.

A Note on Symmetric Random Vectors with an Application to Discrete Choice

This paper studies random vectors X featuring symmetric distributions in that i) the order of the random variables in X does not affect its distribution, or ii) the distribution of X is symmetric at zero. We derive a number of characterization results for such random vectors, thereby connecting the distributional symmetry to various notions of how (Euclidean) functions have been regarded as symmetric. In addition, we present results about the marginals and conditionals of symmetrically distributed random vectors, and apply some of our results to various transformations of random vectors, e.g., to sums or products of random variables, or in context of a choice probability system known from economic models of discrete choice.

Distributional Comparative Statics with Heterogeneous Agents

We propose a general approach to study the differential effects of exogenous shocks in economic models with heterogeneous agents. Our setting applies to models that can be stated as ``competition for market shares'' in a broad sense. Examples that fit our type of structure are ubiquitous in competition theory, monopolistic competition, political economics and applied game theory. We show that even in presence of any number of arbitrarily heterogeneous agents, a single recursive relation characterizes the distributional pattern of equilibrium market shares, and related measures. We identify conceptual conditions under which the market share function rotates, thereby either causing more or less equality among the agents, and study the distributional comparative statics in examples from various economic fields.

Mental Capabilities, Heterogeneous Trading Patterns and Performance in an Experimental Asset Market

We develop and test a framework of mental information representation in an asset market setting. The model predicts heterogeneous trading behavior as a consequence of two distinct mental capabilities: analytical skills and mentalizing, where the former involves quantitative, objective aspects of a decision problem, and the latter an accurate assessment of others' behavior and intentions. Individual differences in capabilities induce specific, differential trading patterns and performances, despite the availability of identical information. The most successful traders are strong in both capabilities, while the general relation between success and mental capabilities is non-monotone. The experimental data strongly supports the theoretical conjectures.
