Der Band untersucht an zahlreichen Beispielen die Bedeutung Marias in der Kultur der Gegenwart. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit finden Wallfahrtsorte, Gebetsstätten und Marienheiligtümer, etwa Altötting, "Maria Schnee" in Aufhausen, Marienfried, Köln, Mariazell (Österreich), Disentis (Schweiz), Lourdes und Pontmain (Frankreich) oder Quito (Ecuador). Die Bedeutung Marias in der Gegenwartskultur wird ferner anhand von Musik, Kunst, Literatur, Film und Rundfunk diskutiert oder in spezifischen Publikationen wie dem Marienlexikon oder dem Gotteslob untersucht.
