United We Act brings together an investigation into the topic of connected communities by the Creative Media group and the Social Sciences Perspective of the Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy (SiDE) research project based at Culture Lab, Newcastle.This publication gathers together the main aspects of the study consisting of the final report 'Situating Communities through Creative Technologies and Practice' and the expressions of interest of the participants for the September 2011 international interdisciplinary symposium.The report explores the relation between creative uses of digital technologies and the notion of connected communities; and the symposium expanded on this by opening up the dialogue on the topic to international experts from various disciplines, grass-roots community workers, and the general public. In addition we provide an extended bibliography as a research tool on the topic and suggestions for future research.
The theme of this Research Companion is 'connectivity and the global reach of electroacoustic music and sonic arts made with technology'. The possible scope of such a companion in the field of electronic music has changed radically over the last 30 years. The definitions of the field itself are now broader - there is no clear boundary between 'electronic music' and 'sound art'. Photocatalytic nanomaterials have a great potential in such applications as reduction of carbon dioxide and degradation of various pollutants. They are equally important in the production and storage of energy, e.g. in the conversion of solar energy to electricity, and the production of hydrogen in photoelectrochemical cells. Research on synthesis, characterization and specific applications is reported for titanium oxide and a number of other promising catalysts, such as silver phosphate, cerium oxide, zinc oxide and zinc sulfide.
Advances in chemical engineering are focused on intensification of reactions, unit operations and mechanical operations. Intensification facilitates reduction in cost, size and increase in conversion, separation and selectivity. In case of distillation, reactive distillation can reduce energy cost and increase product quality considerably compared to conventional reactor- separator method. Similar advantages can be considered for reaction adsorption and other reactive separations.
