Letters from Canada

Andrew Glen was born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1912. Initially he worked as an engineer in Toronto, but in 1923 bought a small farm on the outskirts of Pickering. He continued to work on the land for the remainder of his active life and for a period in the 1930’s he contributed a regular column to the ‘Toronto Star’. He recorded his detailed observations of the changing seasons and farming activities related to the time of year. This book presents a selection of these rural essays, originally written between 1931 and 1938. As social history, these essays presented a vivid picture of a way of life unfamiliar to city dwellers at that time, and now provide a reminder of farmi...

Computational Probability

This title organizes computational probability methods into a systematic treatment. The book examines two categories of problems. "Algorithms for Continuous Random Variables" covers data structures and algorithms, transformations of random variables, and products of independent random variables. "Algorithms for Discrete Random Variables" discusses data structures and algorithms, sums of independent random variables, and order statistics.

The Grotto and Other Stories

This is a collection of short stories based on real life events dealing with issues facing us all; life and death, revenge, morality, injustice, and inadequate healthcare. From the coming of age of three boys, in the title story, "The Grotto", to the revenge enacted by a jilted lover in "Revenge of a Forlorn Lover", to the dilemma facing a man who was unjustly treated by another in "Harry and the Contractor", to the misfortune of an unfulfilled employee in "Crazy", to the question of faith in "One Weekend in Rome", and to the difficulties facing a cancer patient in "The Healer", these stories will have you wishing there was more.

This focuses on the developing field of building probability models with the power of symbolic algebra systems. The book combines the uses of symbolic algebra with probabilistic/stochastic application and highlights the applications in a variety of contexts. The research explored in each chapter is unified by the use of A Probability Programming Language (APPL) to achieve the modeling objectives. APPL, as a research tool, enables a probabilist or statistician the ability to explore new ideas, methods, and models. Furthermore, as an open-source language, it sets the foundation for future algorithms to augment the original code. Computational Probability Applications is comprised of fifteen ch...

This new edition includes the latest advances and developments in computational probability involving A Probability Programming Language (APPL). The book examines and presents, in a systematic manner, computational probability methods that encompass data structures and algorithms. The developed techniques address problems that require exact probability calculations, many of which have been considered intractable in the past. The book addresses the plight of the probabilist by providing algorithms to perform calculations associated with random variables. Computational Probability: Algorithms and Applications in the Mathematical Sciences, 2nd Edition begins with an introductory chapter that co...

Applied Soft Computing Technologies: The Challenge of Complexity

This volume presents the proceedings of the 9th Online World Conference on Soft Computing in Industrial Applications, held on the World Wide Web in 2004. It includes lectures, original papers and tutorials presented during the conference. The book brings together outstanding research and developments in soft computing, including evolutionary computation, fuzzy logic, neural networks, and their fusion, and its applications in science and technology.
