Dynamics of Class and Stratification in Poland
This book is about long-term changes to class and inequality in Poland. Drawing upon major social surveys, the team of authors from the Polish Academy of Sciences offer the rare comprehensive study of important changes to the social structure from the communist era to the present. The core argument is that, even during extreme societal transformations, key features of social life have long-lasting, stratifying effects. The authors analyse the core issues of inequality research that best explain “who gets what and why:” social mobility, status attainment and their mechanisms, with a focus on education, occupation, and income. The transition from communist political economy to liberal democracy and market capitalism offers a unique opportunity for scholars to understand how people move from one stratifi cation regime to the next. There are valuable lessons to be learned from linking past to present. Classic issues of class, stratification, mobility, and attainment have endured decades of radical social change. Youth and Unconventional Political Engagement
This book analyses the relationship between youth and participation, looking specifically at those repertories of involvement that are commonly clustered under the concept of “unconventional political participation”. The author focuses on the connections between youth practices of participation and youth conditions in contemporary society. Drawing from the analysis of three ethnographic case studies conducted on experiences of youth participation in Italy and Sweden, the circumstances and the reasons leading young people to express their political ideas through forms of engagement located outside the realm of “formal politics” are explored. The book seeks to bring back the specificities of contemporary youth at the centre of the analysis of youth practices of participation, highlighting their often overlooked socio-historical and generational ‘situatedness’. Youth and Unconventional Political Engagement will be of interest students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including youth studies, political science, and sociology.

„W kręgu Stanisława Ossowskiego” to projekt naukowy realizowany przez Instytut Socjologii Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Jego celami są: dokumentacja dorobku Ossowskiego i jego środowiska, badania nad twórczością i znaczeniem tego kręgu oraz publikacja niedrukowanych pism uczonego. Tom pierwszy Dzienników jest drugą książką powstałą w ramach projektu. Dzienniki Stanisława Ossowskiego, wydawane ponad pół wieku po jego śmierci, obejmują niemal całe życie autora, wplecione w historię Polski. Pisane były, z przerwami, od 1905 do 1963 roku. Są zbiorem zapisków z życia codziennego, wojen i podróży, obserwacji środowiskowych, notatek z lektur i przemyśleń; łączy je uważność i refleksyjność. Stanowią materiał do biografii intelektualnej Ossowskiego i źródło do historii życia umysłowego w Polsce. Bogaty aparat naukowy ułatwia zrozumienie zapisków i umieszcza je w kontekście ludzi, miejsc i czasów. Tom II obejmie lata 1939–1949, a tom III – 1949–1963.
The Collapse of 'real Socialism' in Poland
Jacek Tittenbrun, born in 1952, is Professor of Sociology, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology and Head of the Economic Sociology Research Unit at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland. He received his MA (with Distinction) and his PhD there. His research interests centre on the relationship between economy and society. He is the author of seven books. Among them are: Interactionism in Contemporary American Sociology, Financial Institutions and Ownership of Equity Capital; New Capitalists? Employee Pension Funds and Ownership of Equity Capital (all in Polish). His forthcoming book, co-authored with two other Polish scholars, is Ownership and Society (in English). He has published about seventy scholarly articles in professional (including Anglo-American) journals and contributions to collective volumes.
