Too many chess players adopt an unnecessarily defensive approach with the Black pieces when they should be more ambitious and strive immediately for double-edged positions with winning chances. Adorjan offers concrete opening variations and illustrative games designed to achieve this, alongside a philosophy to generate a positive state of mind when entering a battle. Based on the best-selling 'Black is OK!' this title is the third volume in a series designed to build on the 1988 cult classic's success. Continuing Adorjan's crusade, started in the revolutionary 1960s, it encourages players not only to win more games with Black but also to enjoy themselves in the process!

Many chess players act intimidated and overly cautious when they have the Black pieces. They are so preoccupied with White’s advantage of the first move, that their predominant urge is to defend against possible threats and to safeguard their position. With his iconoclastic ‘Black is OK’ books, Andras Adorjan has consistently been fighting this negative mindset. In Black is Back!, the Hungarian grandmaster continues his crusade. He shows that White’s advantage is far from obvious and that winning with Black starts with having the right attitude. Adorjan presents a wealth of Black wins from his own long career and from great players he has worked with. He shows that with creative play Black can often turn the tables. Surprising statistics and instructive examples from modern-day chess will encourage even the most defensively minded players to look for hidden opportunities. This book will convince both club players and professionals that there is no reason to be afraid when playing Black. Instead they will start looking for creative solutions and beat White more often.

Simen Agdestein was awarded the title of chess grandmaster at the age of eighteen, the youngest in the world at the time. Two years later he wrote in his diary that he believed he could become the best in the world. But chess wasn't his only passion. He also excelled at football and was selected nine times for the Norwegian national team. Foreign clubs wanted to sign him as a professional. Simen Agdestein's combined careers are unique and amazing. 'I can't choose between my left and my right arm', he once said of the choice between chess and football. His international football career was cut short when he refused to play for Norway in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland. He opted instead...

What Amateurs Can Learn from Ulf Andersson's Positional Masterpieces One of the most effective ways to improve your chess is to take a world class-player as your example. By collecting his games, studying his choices and examining his style, you will understand what made him rise to the very top. This is what Guido Kern and Jurgen Kaufeld have done with Swedish chess legend Ulf Andersson, a positional genius with a crystal-clear style, who rose to the number 4 spot of the FIDE world rankings. Kaufeld and Kern have selected 80 of Andersson’s games and grouped them into 15 thematic strategy lessons, pinpointing exactly how the Swede made the difference in each case. Their instructive verbal explanations will improve your strategic skills and your positional feeling. Every chess player knows how difficult it can be to convert an advantage into a win. Positional technique is what you need and Grandmaster Chess Strategy teaches you exactly that. Throughout the book the authors have selected dozens of test positions at particularly instructive stages of the games.

The Reliable Past is the eagerly awaited sequel to Russian Silhouettes, Genna Sosonko's marvellous collection of portraits from the golden age of Soviet chess. In this new book, the author again shows himself a perceptive chronicler of a time when chess occupied a unique position in his native country, but he also wanders across its borders with his memories of Dutch World Champion Max Euwe and a touching tribute to the first ever British grandmaster, Tony Miles. From the preface by Garry Kasparov: The Reliable Past presents the reader with a gallery of wonderful pen-portraits that radiate the author?s love of and devotion to chess, yet are tempered by a due measure of objectivity and detachment. Look, it says ? this is the chess world and its heroes, warts and all!

As a Chess Master who has spent many years playing aggressive and attacking chess, I was quite dismayed during a recent visit to my local bookstore. I was in search of a book that covered an array of attacks against many Pawn formations in an organized fashion. Needless to say, my search came up empty. The books on attacking fell short in many ways. Many of the books were simply a small collection of attack games with no instruction about the art of attacking or about the skills required to become a great attacker. None of them provided the reader with any reference information about attacking or the weaknesses of various Pawn formations. None of them contained games with attacking themes like the Traxler Variation of the Two Knight's Defense, and the Jack Young Fishing Pole. None of them contained any wild attacking ideas that can stream from opening gambits such as the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, King's Gambit, Scotch Gambit, Nakhmanson Gambit, etc. 500 pages, 435 games, Figurine Chess Notation.

In many 1.d4 openings, Black has trouble getting his bishop on c8 into play. Former Russian Chess Champion Alexey Bezgodov presents a radical solution to this nagging problem; liberate your bishop right away and put it on f5 on the second move! Play 2...Bf5! against either 2.c4 or 2.Nf3 will surprise your opponent and is also a great way to support your development, because the bishop takes control of the important square e4. If White does not immediately take decisive action, then within a move or two he can relinquish any hopes on an opening advantage. Alexey Bezgodov has found some great antidotes to White's most dangerous reactions in sharp and attractive lines. To test your understanding of his system he has included more than 100 exercises. After studying the fresh ideas and the clear explanations presented in The Liberated Bishop Defence chess players of almost every strength will enjoy the flexibility of a surprising, effective and universal weapon against 1.d4.
