Apresentada por Diogo de Vasconcellos como uma mulher culta, instruída pelas carmelitas, a personagem encantou Angela Vianna Botelho e Carla Anastasia. A partir de uma aprofundada pesquisa, as autoras conseguiram arrolar, no Brasil e em Portugal, dados importantes sobre a vida de D. Maria da Cruz e sua família, moradores do sertão do São Francisco, e sua participação nos motins do sertão.
