Between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, women assumed public roles of unprecedented prominence in Italian religious culture. Legally subordinated, politically excluded, socially limited, and ideologically disdained, women's active participation in religious life offered them access to power in all its forms. These essays explore the involvement of women in religious life throughout northern and central Italy and trace the evolution of communities of pious women as they tried to achieve their devotional goals despite the strictures of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. The contributors examine relations between holy women, their devout followers, and society at large. Including contributions from leading figures in a new generation of Italian historians of religion, this book shows how women were able to carve out broad areas of influence by carefully exploiting the institutional church and by astutely manipulating religious percepts.
Tempting the Tempter considers how far fifteenth-century Italian mystics would go to imitate Christ, even in his encounters with the Devil in the desert. Elena of Udine, Caterina of Bologna, and Colomba of Rieti created their own desert experience through their austere devotional practices, and they suffered and overcame temptations from the Devil. This work explores how these women actively pursued encounters with the Devil, and how these private temptations prepared them for a public ministry of miracles, contributed to their perception as living saints, and allowed their biographers to promote them as true imitators of Christ, worthy of sainthood.

The humanist perception of fourteenth-century Rome as a slumbering ruin awaiting the Renaissance and the return of papal power has cast a long shadow on the historiography of the city. Challenging this view, James A. Palmer argues that Roman political culture underwent dramatic changes in the late Middle Ages, with profound and lasting implications for city's subsequent development.
