Psychiatrization of Society
Worldwide, there have been consistently high or even rising incidences of people classified as mentally ill, paired with increasing mental healthcare service utilization over the last decades. While psychiatric institutions have been consistently expanding, psychiatric knowledge has become increasingly dispersed and globalized, making psychiatric vocabularies and classificatory systems widely available, shaping increasing areas of life, creating powerful markets for therapeutic services of all kinds, and impacting how we understand ourselves and others. This process can be described as the psychiatrization of society. Psychiatrization is highly complex, diverse, and global, although it takes different forms in different contexts, involves various actors with largely diverging motives, and is part of a wider assemblage of the psy-disciplines.

Diagnostic Fluidity
Diagnostic procedures are emblematic of medical work. Scholars in the field of social studies of medicine identify diverse dimensions of diagnosis that point to controversies, processual qualities and contested evidence. In this anthology, diagnostic fluidity is seen to permeate diagnostic work in a wide range of contexts, from medical interactions in the clinic, domestic settings and other relations of affective work, to organizational structures, and in historical developments. The contributors demonstrate, each in their own way, how different agents ‘do diagnosis’, highlighting the multi-faceted elements of uncertainty and mutability integral to diagnostic work. At the same time, the contributors also show how in ‘doing diagnosis’ enactments of subjectivities, representations of cultural imaginaries, bodily processes, and socio-cultural changes contribute to configuring diagnostic fluidity in significant ways.
Women’s Work in Special Period Cuba
The abrupt loss of Soviet financial support in 1989 resulted in the near-collapse of the Cuban economy, ushering in the almost two decades of austerity measures and severe shortages of food and basic consumer goods referred to as the Special Period. Through the innovative framework of individual and collective memory, Daliany Jerónimo Kersh brings together analysis of press sources and oral histories to offer a compelling portrait of how Cuban women cleverly combined various forms of paid work to make ends meet. Disproportionately impacted by the economic crisis given their role as primary caregivers and household managers and unable to survive on devalued state salaries alone, women often employed informal and illegal earning strategies. As she argues, this regression into gendered work such as cooking, sewing, cleaning, reselling, and providing sexual services precipitated by the post-Soviet crisis to a large extent marked a return to pre-revolutionary gendered divisions of labor.

Although rare diseases have captured public attention in recent decades, the lived experiences of people affected by these conditions remain on the periphery of medical anthropological inquiry. Focusing on Poland, Finland, and Sweden, and foregrounding notions of “rare” or “chronic” disease as an embedded category, this book critically analyzes entanglements between people and families with rare diseases and care practices that involve local healthcare policies, practitioners, and treatment modalities. Agonistic Memory and the Legacy of 20th Century Wars in Europe
This book discusses the merits of the theory of agonistic memory in relation to the memory of war. After explaining the theory in detail it provides two case studies, one on war museums in contemporary Europe and one on mass graves exhumations, which both focus on analyzing to what extent these memory sites produce different regimes of memory. Furthermore, the book provides insights into the making of an agonistic exhibition at the Ruhr Museum in Essen, Germany. It also analyses audience reaction to a theatre play scripted and performed by the Spanish theatre company Micomicion that was supposed to put agonism on stage. There is also an analysis of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) designed and delivered on the theory of agonistic memory and its impact on the memory of war. Finally, the book provides a personal review of the history, problems and accomplishments of the theory of agonistic memory by the two editors of the volume.
Corona-Pandemie: Diverse Zugänge zu einem aktuellen Superdiskurs
Die Auswirkungen der neuen pandemischen Realität fanden bereits in der Sprache ihren Niederschlag. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes fokussieren unterschiedliche sprachliche Phänomene, die sich in dem aktuellen Corona-Diskurs beobachten lassen und die diesen charakterisieren. Der Großteil der Beiträge konzentriert sich auf die deutsche Sprache, wobei auch kontrastive, deutsch-polnische Studien und Untersuchungen zu anderen Sprachen (z.B. Englisch, Polnisch, Russisch, Tschechisch) zu finden sind. Erörtert werden dabei u.a. lexikalische Besonderheiten, Humor und multimodale Texte im Corona-Diskurs; Metaphern und Ausdruck von Emotionen; ausgewählte Subdiskurse zur Corona-Pandemie sowie die Verflechtung des Corona-Diskurses mit Politik und Werbung.
