Fragments of memory become the meters by which a life is marked in Anne Colwell's MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME, artfully sculpted, intensely felt. "Pressing words into our palms, Colwell details 'the pain brought...from somewhere beyond this canvas': a father's fizzled dreams, a mother's addiction, the artist's awareness of the 'the almost.' An ekphrastic poem's speaker wonders, 'What do you need me to be?' Colwell doesn't need to ask this question herself. She knows what we need her to be: a witness for 'where we're going or where we've been, ' the voice that says, 'There.'"--Erin Murphy "Anne Colwell's poems steam and scorch, pulsing with stars, fish, birds, blood, and seawater as they track the moments of familial connection and disconnection that underlie the 'disordered passion of living.' Terse and expansive, tough and tender, these hard gems 'cut deep' but also shine."--Meredith Davies Hadaway

Tuned and Under Tension

Most of the previous critical work on W. D. Snodgrass concentrates on his early period. These new essays, by both established and emerging scholars, constitute a close reading of the later poetry, principally Midnight Carnival, The Death of Cock Robin, Each in His Season, and The Fuehrer Bunker. The collection also contains the first interview with Snodgrass conducted after the publication of the new Bunker in 1995.

Mastery's End

Focusing on lyric poetry, Mastery's End looks at important, yet neglected, issues of subjectivity in post-World War II travel literature. Jeffrey Gray departs from related studies in two regards: nearly all recent scholarly books on the literature of travel have dealt with pre-twentieth-century periods, and all are concerned with narrative genres. Gray questions whether the postcolonial theoretical model of travel as mastery, hegemony, and exploitation still applies. In its place he suggests a model of vulnerability, incoherence, and disorientation to reflect the modern destabilizing nature of travel, a process that began with the unprecedented movement of people during and after World War I...

Elizabeth Bishop

Linda Anderson explores Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, from her early days at Vassar College to her last great poems in Geography III and the later uncollected poems. Drawing generously on Bishop's notebooks and letters, the book situates Bishop both in her historical and cultural context and in terms of her own writing process, where the years between beginning a poem and completing it, for which Bishop is legendary, are seen as a necessary part of their composition. The book begins by offering a new reading of Bishop's relationship with Marianne Moore and with modernism. Through her journeys to Europe Bishop, it is also argued, learned a great deal from visual artists and from surrealism. However the book also follows the way Bishop came back to memories of her childhood, developing ideas about narrative, in order to explore time, both the losses it demands and the connections it makes possible. The lines of connections are both those between Bishop and her contemporaries and her context and those she inscribed through her own work, suggesting how her poems incorporate a process of arrival and create new possibilities of meaning
