This dissertation analyzes Colombia's conflictive nineteenth-century state-building process, focusing in the subnational territories of Antioquia and Cauca. It studies the interconnected processes of territorial reconfiguration and decentralization (and recentralization) of state-authority from 1850 to 1899. Throughout these decades, the conflictive relations between the central government and the political elites in the nine subnational territories, and among them, set the stage for uncompromising politics and recurrent crises, that more frequently than not led to warfare and to abrupt institutional changes. Antioquia and Cauca were key players in these processes, counterbalancing the polit...

Blood and Fire

Between 1946 and 1966a surge of violence in Colombia left 200,000 dead in one of the worst conflicts the western hemisphere has ever experienced. the first seven years of this little-studied period of terror, known as la Violencia, is the subject of Blood and Fire. The Para-State

Since its independence in the nineteenth century, the South American state of Colombia has been shaped by decades of bloody political violence. In The Para-State,ÊAldo Civico draws on interviews with paramilitary death squads and drug lords to provide a cultural interpretation of the countryÕs history of violence and state control. Between 2003 and 2008, Civico gained unprecedented access to some of ColombiaÕs most notorious leaders of the death squads. He also conducted interviews with the victims of paramilitary, with drug kingpins, and with vocal public supporters of the paramilitary groups. Drawing on the work of Deleuze and Guattari, this riveting work demonstrates how the paramilitaries have in essence become a war machine deployed by the Colombian state to control and maintain its territory and political legitimacy.
