In der bekanntesten Erzählung "Der Taugenichts" geht ein junger Mann seinen eigenen Weg und wird entgegen dem Willen seines Vaters und zum Entsetzen seiner Umgebung Maler. Arbeit findet er bei einem Unternehmer, dessen Tochter wie er das Leben als sinnentlehrt empfindet und sich über die Zustände in der Gesellschaft empört. Die beiden heiraten, doch das naturnahe, grundständige Leben, das ihnen vorschwebt, ist nicht ohne Schwierigkeiten.
