Clare Shaw's fourth collection shows that poetry can say as much as about who we are - and especially how we feel - as psychology. The book is inhabited by the character of Monkey, who shows by example how early attachments and trauma may shape us, but how ultimately we come to realise our own general theory and practice of love.

Memories of Belonging is a three-generation oral-history study of the offspring of southern Italians who migrated to Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1913. Supplemented with the interviewees’ private documents and working from U.S. and Italian archives, Christa Wirth documents a century of transatlantic migration, assimilation, and later-generation self-identification. Her research reveals how memories of migration, everyday life, and ethnicity are passed down through the generations, altered, and contested while constituting family identities. The fact that not all descendants of Italian migrants moved into the U.S. middle class, combined with their continued use of hyphenated identities, points to a history of lived ethnicity and societal exclusion. Moreover, this book demonstrates the extent of forgetting that is required in order to construct an ethnic identity.

The living and the dead are working side by side in John Challis's dramatic debut collection, The Resurrectionists. Whether in London's veg and meat markets, far below the Dartford Crossing, or on the edge of the Western world, these poems journey into a buried and sometimes violent landscape to locate the traces of ourselves that remain. Amidst the political disquiet rising from the groundwater, or the unearthing of the class divide at the gravesides of plague victims, the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest when a child is born, and something close to hope for the future is resurrected.

Survival of patients with metastatic cancer has increased over the past two decades as a result of a progressive improvement of regional and systemic therapies. However, oncologists' estimates of patients' predicted overall survival in metastatic cancer are imprecise. The purpose of this book is to systematize the evidence regarding the prognostic factors of metastatic gastrointestinal tumors, separating the findings with the highest level of evidence among those available for each disease by selecting studies with the highest scientific evidence level.

Portrait of the Artist and His Mother in Twentieth-Century Italian Culture

The power exercised by the mother on the son in Mediterranean cultures has been amply studied. Italy is a special case in the Modern Era and the phenomenon of Mammismo italiano is indeed well known. Scholars have traced this obsession with the mother figure to the Catholic cult of the Virgin Mary, but in fact, it is more ancient. What has not been adequately addressed however, is how Mammismo italiano has been manifested in complex ways in various modern artistic forms. Portrait of the Artist and His Mother in Twentieth-Century Italian Culture focuses on case studies of five prominent creative personalities, representing different, sometimes overlapping artistic genres (Luigi Pirandello, Pie...
