The Archibald McLachlins of Southwold (emigrated 1845) & the Alexander McLartys of North Yarmouth (emigrated 1831)
Archibald McLachlin was born in Southwold. He emigrated to Canada in 1845 at the age of 46 with his wife Isabella, his second cousin. Their children included Donald or Daniel, Duncan, Catherine, Mary, Janet, Anne, Archie and James. Alexander McLarty was born in North Yarmouth. He emigrated to Canada in 1831. Alexander married Mary McTavish and their children included James, Alexander, Angus, Jane, Mary, Christine, Archibald, Isobel, Margaret, Betsy and Catherine.

Volume One deals with the county of Argyll, a location from where may of the pioneer emigrants who settled in colonial North Carolina, upper New York, Jamaica, and the Canadian Maritimes originated. The book does not claim to be a comprehensive directory of all the people of Argyll during the mid-eighteenth century but rather is an attempt to demonstrate the range and quality of material available.
