Two thousand years of history as witnessed by one man? The Arcworld kicks off with the story of Titus and his attempt to discover not only his elusive past but to survive long enough to learn his purpose. From ancient Rome through the rise and fall of empires and the terror of the enlightenment, Titus witnesses the worst of human history while doing his best to avoid altering its course. Join him and his companions, and their indomitable spirits, on their trek towards eternity and an unknown event that is promised to alter the course of humankind. What would you do if you could live two-thousand years? Would you meet your idols? Would you become a dictator? And, if you could choose who could live those years with you, who would you choose? What if the fate of the entire world was at stake? Would you then choose differently? Book One in the series builds the Arcworld in which 7,500 years of human history are chronicled. From ancient Rome to distant solar systems, follow the adventures of the inhabitants of Earth as they escape their humble beginnings and reach out to the stars.

Saving Nature

Environmentalism has moved into the center of the most influential social movements in late modernity. From preserving pre-industrial landscapes, advocating the intrinsic value of nature, and protecting ecosystems against overexploitation, it has developed into a worldview, ethos, and practice, that is radically shifting the frontiers of politics, economics, and ethics. Saving Nature approaches environmentalism as a belief system. The book explores the impact of environmentalism on faith communities and vice versa, and analyzes how environmental worldviews, values, attitudes, and discourses affect religion. By drawing on sources in the sociology of religion and environmental sociology, it sheds light on the religious dimensions of environmentalism. It locates the quick growth of environmentalism in the history of allegedly secular modernity and interprets environmentalism in the context of modernity's re-sacralization. Arcworld continues with the story of Samuel, out of place and out of time, thrust into a reality he didn’t choose. From adversaries hell bent on his destruction to religions that hint of his past, he must survive long enough to tell his own tale and save those he loves. Book Two in the Arcworld series chronicles how the Third Age of Man turns to the Fourth. 7,500 years of human history results in the story of one man and his rise to be the new messiah, much to his consternation.

This book is concerned with the argument that religious traditions are inherently environmentally friendly. Yet in a developing country such as India, the majority of people cannot afford to put the 'Earth first' regardless of the extent to which this idea can be supported by their religious traditions. Does this mean that the linking of religion and environmental concerns is a strategy more suited to contexts where people have a level of material security that enables them to think and act like environmentalists? This question is approached through a series of case studies from Britain and India. The book concludes that there is a tension between the 'romantic' ecological discourse common among many western activists and scholars, and a more pragmatic approach, which is often found in India. The adoption of environmental causes by the Hindu Right in India makes it difficult to distinguish genuine concern for the environment from the broader politics surrounding the idea of a Hindu rashtra (nation). This raises a further level of analysis, which has not been provided in other studies.

Stories of the Stranger

Encompassing scriptural, historical, folk, and newly commissioned tales, a collection exploring the centrality of the "stranger" in every major faith tradition—a commonality that could create a more compassionate worldEvery faith has, as a fundamental moment of its formation, the experience of exile, the experience of losing everything, or being thrown out, of being dispossessed, and of relying on the generosity, or not, of strangers. Furthermore, every major faith tradition has popular stories showing how you are more likely to meet the divine in the outcast, the reject, the beggar, than you are in the king, the prince, or indeed minister, priest, or nun. Faiths are therefore often the first to welcome and help refugees. Classic tales on this theme have been retold here from a contemporary perspective, with humor and wit. Sitting alongside powerful illustrations, the tales serve to remind readers of the centrality of the stranger in all traditions, thereby creating the potential for a more compassionate world. This collection is a resource for reflection, ideal for storytelling groups, for drama, art, and poetry, and a unique educational tool as well.

Corporate Conquests

Tenacious patterns of ethnic and economic inequality persist in the rural, largely minority regions of China's north- and southwest. Such inequality is commonly attributed to geography, access to resources, and recent political developments. In Corporate Conquests, C. Patterson Giersch provides a desperately-needed challenge to these conventional understandings by tracing the disempowerment of minority communities to the very beginnings of China's modern development. Focusing on the emergence of private and state corporations in Yunnan Province during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the book reveals how entrepreneurs centralized corporate power even as they expanded their businesses througho...
