Arcworld continues with the story of Samuel, out of place and out of time, thrust into a reality he didn’t choose. From adversaries hell bent on his destruction to religions that hint of his past, he must survive long enough to tell his own tale and save those he loves. Book Two in the Arcworld series chronicles how the Third Age of Man turns to the Fourth. 7,500 years of human history results in the story of one man and his rise to be the new messiah, much to his consternation.

The Arc

Two thousand years of history as witnessed by one man? The Arcworld kicks off with the story of Titus and his attempt to discover not only his elusive past but to survive long enough to learn his purpose. Join him and his companions, and their indomitable spirits, on their trek towards eternity and an unknown event that is promised to alter the course of humankind. What would you do if you could live two-thousand years? Would you meet your idols? Would you become a dictator? And, if you could choose who could live those years with you, who would you choose? What if the fate of the entire world was at stake? Would you then choose differently? Book One in the series builds the Arcworld in which 7,500 years of human history are chronicled. From ancient Rome to distant solar systems, follow the adventures of the inhabitants of Earth as they escape their humble beginnings and reach out to the stars.

Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is a synthesis of findings and thoughts concerning hypoxia. The thermodynamics of hypoxia are discussed in detail, including acid-base balance and self-pollution resulting from the accumulation of anaerobic end-products. The book focuses on descriptions and discussions of common facets, contrasting solutions in a variety of physiological hypoxia defense strategies, including those shown by plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Special treatment is given to the distinctive problems that hypoxia presents to vulnerable organs such as the kidney, liver, and brain. It also addresses pathological events in addition to protective mechanisms. Clinical implications of basic research are examined in the book, which provides new insights into underlying pathological processes occuring in hypoxic-induced organ failure and indicates new paths for successful clinical intervention. Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is an excellent reference for all researchers interested in the physiological effects of hypoxia, underlying pathological events, and protective mechanisms.

Cultural Repertoires

It is apparent that every linguistic and literary tradition will wish to distinguish broad periods in its historical evolution. One way of demarcating such periods is by isolating and identifying dominant repertoires of texts, styles or types, which may be seen as preserving repositories of material, promoting literary models, privileging formal constraints, or inspiring theoretical reflections - or all of these. The present collection of studies represents the results of a colloquium held at the University of Groningen in 2001. The contributions range widely in area, time, and theme: from general theory of acceptation into the canon to particular case studies; from overall descriptions of cultural repertoires to their very manufacture; from Ancient Mesopotamia to the European avant-garde - taking in Homeric Greece, the Arabic world, the Middle Ages, Renaissance Humanism, and modern Dutch literature along the way.

Molecular Pathology

Molecular Pathology: The Molecular Basis of Human Disease provides a current and comprehensive view of the molecular basis and mechanisms of human disease. Combining accepted principles with broader theoretical concepts and with contributions from a group of experts, the book looks into disease processes in the context of traditional pathology and their implications for translational molecular medicine. It also discusses concepts in molecular biology and genetics, recent scientific and technological advances in modern pathology, the concept of ""molecular pathogenesis"" of disease, and how disease evolves from normal cells and tissues due to perturbations in molecular pathways. The book desc...

This unique book presents an approach to viewing trauma. It examines the cellular consequences of trauma at a molecular level and provides new insights into the treatment of traumatic injury, based on cellular responses. The current of trauma research is reviewed, previously unpublished information on the topic is presented, and research directions are included.

Modern Foraminifera

From the reviews: ""This is now the definitive, authoritative text on applied foraminiferal micropaleontology and should be in the library of all practicing micropaleontologists."" (William A. Berggren, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Micropaleontology, 47:1 (2001)""During the last 20 years there has been an explosion of publications about foraminifera from an amazing variety of disciplines: basic cell biology, algal symbiosis, biomineralization, biogeography, ecology, pollution, chemical oceanography, geochemistry, paleoceanography, and geology. This book summarizes contributions by l.

Dispute Poems and Dialogues in the Ancient and Mediaeval Near East

In 1989 the University of Groningen celebrated its 375th anniversary. Near Eastern Studies, in one form or another, have been part of the Groningen curriculum almost from the beginning. For this reason the Department of Middle-Eastern Languages and Cultures decided to contribute to the anniversary celebrations by organizing an international Symposium and a Workshop on The Literary Debate in Semitic and Related Literatures. The topic of the Symposium and the Workshop was chosen and prepared by the members of the research programme Disclosure of Semitic Texts. Since 1985 the literary debate in the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hebrew, Aramaic/Syriac and Arabic language and literature has been a central ...

Anoxia

ANOXIA defines the lack of free molecular oxygen in an environment. In the presence of organic matter, anaerobic prokaryotes produce compounds such as free radicals, hydrogen sulfide, or methane that are typically toxic to aerobes. The concomitance of suppressed respiration and presence of toxic substances suggests these habitats are inhospitable to Eukaryota. Ecologists sometimes term such environments 'Death Zones'. This book presents, however, a collection of remarkable adaptations to anoxia, observed in Eukaryotes such as protists, animals, plants and fungi. Case studies provide evidence for controlled beneficial use of anoxia by, for example, modification of free radicals, use of alternative electron donors for anaerobic metabolic pathways, and employment of anaerobic symbionts. The complex, interwoven existence of oxic and anoxic conditions in space and time is also highlighted as is the idea that eukaryotic inhabitation of anoxic habitats was established early in Earth history.
