Planning with the semi-input-output method
The semi-input-output method was introduced by Professor Jan Tinbergen in the early 1960's in fairly obscure places in the economic literature. The basic idea of the method is a very simple one and does not require lengthy and sophisticated exposition to be understood. This fact, together perhaps with Tinbergen's dislike for very formalized and technical analysis, probably explains why he himself has never given a full exposition and elaboration of this method. Nevertheless, the concept did not remain unnoticed and authors such as B. Hansen and some of Tinbergen's collaborators, in particular P. A. Cor nelisse and J. Versluis, have contributed to the elaboration of the method. The present work by Dr. A. Kuyvenhoven, also a long-time collaborator of Tinbergen, has provided us with the first full, and in my opinion definite, exposition of the nature, technique and use of the semi-input output method, now more than 15 years after the launching of the concept.

Agricultural Markets Beyond Liberalization
Agricultural markets have entered a long-term process of liberalization, with the aim of reducing imposed market imperfections such as monopolistic public trade, entry barriers and subsidies. The experience of more than a decade of agriculture liberalization offers a good opportunity to review and analyze the outcome of this process and to draw lessons for the future. The central topic in Agricultural Markets Beyond Liberalization is the relationship between market structure and how markets perform in a dynamic context during a liberalization process. The topic is studied from both a micro and macro viewpoint and refers to different types of agricultural markets. This volume brings together the dynamics of agricultural markets in several parts of the world, with a special focus on transition economics and Africa. The different studies cover geographical areas as wide as a district as well as a group of countries, and institutions from individual contracts to multi-national organizations. Environmental Impacts of Macroeconomic and Sectoral Policies
The importance of violence as a contributory factor to urban poverty in Jamaica has gone largely unresearched. This paper outlines the results of a study undertaken by the World Bank and the government of Jamaica to focus on the issue. The study uses a participatory urban appraisal methodology in five poor urban areas, mainly in Kingston, to identify and understand local community perceptions of four different aspects of violence: its causes; its interrelationship with poverty; its impact on employment, economic and social infrastructure, and local social institutions; and ways in which government, communities, households, and individuals can work to reduce it.
