L'art en guerre, France 1938-1947
Catalogue de l'exposition L'Art en guerre, France 1938-1947, présentée au Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris du 12 octobre 2012 au 17 février 2013. Cet ouvrage montre comment, dans un contexte de pénurie et d'oppression, les artistes ont proposé des réponses nouvelles qui modifieront en profondeur le contenu et la forme de l'art jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Articulé en une dizaine de séquences fortes, l'exposition ouvre en 1938 avec l'Exposition internationale du Surréalisme dans l'atmosphère troublée de l'avant-guerre. Cet ouvrage de référence aborde sous un angle nouveau les enjeux artistiques des années 1940, intégrant l'histoire sociale et politique de cette décennie. Il sera composé d'une première partie présentant les oeuvres exposées (plus de 300 oeuvres de quatre-vingts artistes) et d'un abécédaire de plus de 200 entrées, rédigées par plus de 150 auteurs.

It was the beginning of the Gulf War. I watched it on TV and did little else. I was doing badly, you see. Everything was going wrong. I just awaited the end. But then I met Victorien Salagnon, a veteran of the great colonial wars of Indochina, Vietnam and Algeria, a commander who had led his soldiers across the globe, a man with the blood of others up to his elbows. He said he would teach me to paint; he must have been the only painter in the French Forces, but out there no one cares about such things. I cared, though. In return, he wanted me to write his life story. And so he talked, and I wrote, and through him I witnessed the rivers of blood that cut channels through France, I saw the deaths that were as numberless as they were senseless and I began finally to understand the French art of war.

Art beyond Borders
This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe’s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists’ strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period.
