The book is divided into six sections, each representing a chronological culture area. Most of the study deals with Indian art, but Indonesia and the peripheries of Southeast Asia are covered where they reflect Indian influences. The concentration of the study is upon architecture and sculpture; however, it also encompasses painting, jewellery, textiles, metalwork and other crafts.

Oei Hong Djien, Indonesia's distinguished art collector hailling from Magelang, Central Java, is also a writer. From 1990 to the present day, which spans a period of about 20 years, he has written numerous pieces on art. Most are introductions to exhibition catalogues; some are texts for speeches, lectures and discussions; others are articles that have appeared in the catalogues of auction house, magazines and books.

A Passion for Indonesian Art
Georg Tilmann was a Jewish banker who left Germany in the early 1930s to settle in the Netherlands where he became a passionate collector of Indonesian art. Tillmann also made a name for himself with his publications on the evolution of textile designs, comparing their motifs and tracing the connections between the various peoples of Southeast Asia. A Passion Indonesian Art documents Tillmann's collection, illustrating textiles, sculptures, weaponry, religious objects, and other artefacts. One of Tillmann's publications, translated from the Dutch, is also included.
