First published in 1997. In this book the author intends to explore some of the many questions which arise as a result of increasing awareness in our society about equality issues. Can the attempt to make books for children consistent with contemporary views about equality go too far? In any case, are children really as much influenced by books and other material as some educationalists would claim? What can or should we do about the 'classics' Of the past? And are today's children's writers so much better at avoiding giving offence to minorities? How much are children affected by the kind of prejudices and preconceptions that we all grow up with but don't always succeed in acknowledging in later life?

Prevention: What Works with Children and Adolescents? deals with the prevention of psychological problems which are of central concern to those who fund and develop health, social and educational services for children, adolescents and their families. Problems addressed in this book include developmental delay in low birth weight infants and socially disadvantaged children; adjustment problems in children with sensory and additional disabilities and autism; challenging behaviour in children with intellectual disabilities; physical and sexual abuse; bullying; adjustment problems in children with asthma and diabetes; teenage smoking; alcohol use and drug abuse; teenage pregnancy, STDs and HIV infection; post-traumatic adjustment problems and adolescent suicide. Conclusions drawn in this book are based on the results of over 200 rigorously conducted studies of more than 70,000 children.

This comprehensive collection of essays provides a series of highly practical guidelines which schools can implement themselves. Step-by-step advice is given on developing a whole-school policy which is generally seen as the essential nucleus of effective action. The book also suggests methods for tackling bullying through classroom and curriculum activities, including video, drama, and the use of quality circles and of working with pupils involved in bullying situations. Emphasis is placed on assertiveness training for pupils who may be bullied, and non-punitive work with pupils who bully others. As the majority of bullying takes place in playgrounds, the book includes innovative sections on training lunchtime supervisors, enhancing playground activities, and improving the playground environment.

How do teachers identify the potential for greater depth writing and encourage children to meet their full potential? This book was created by people who are not only passionate about primary education, but who are also leading experts in their own particular areas. They have made use of their wide experience to offer practical guidance on greater depth writing, while underpinning this with theoretical understanding. We hope that reading this book helps you to reflect on what greater depth writing looks like and how you can encourage children to write at greater depth. You will find many suggestions for teaching lessons that encourage children to write at greater depth underpinned by theory.

Practical Approaches to Bullying

Originally published in 1991, this book is about bullying and victimisation in children and young people, and ways of dealing with it. With the exception of Chapter 13 which is related to experiences of bullying within the borstal system, superseded by Youth Custody and more recently the Unified Custodial Sentence, it is about bullying in schools. The aim of this book is to help teachers, school governors, and parents work towards reducing the effects of behaviour which can, at worst, blight the lives of victims into adulthood and encourage antisocial and violent behaviour in those who get away with bullying.

This work on improving schools by establishing and integrating whole schools behaviour policies extends to related areas of behaviour management. For example, the Sheffield/DE research project on bullying, found that such whole school policies best counteracted antisocial behaviour.

This is a study of how Education Support Grant projects are being implemented. ESGs are concerned with curriculum development and as such this research centres on two projects - the theory, policy and practice of MCE (multicultural education) and ARE (anti-racist education) in all-white schools. It is suggested that the latter is much more difficult for teachers and pupils alike, especially in all-white schools which tend to think that such issues are irrelevant to them. The conclusions are not wholly positive though suggestions are made for future developments.
