"An outstanding literary biography" AMITAV GHOSH "Mukul writes beautifully, and brings to life a man who has often been misunderstood" BENJAMIN MOSER "This book is a remarkable contribution to the world of Indian letters: ANNIE ZAIDI Sachchidanand Hirananda Vatsyayan 'Agyeya' is unarguably one of the most remarkable figures of Indian literature. From his revolutionary youth to acquiring the mantle of a (highly controversial) patron saint of Hindi literature, Agyeya's turbulent life also tells a history of the Hindi literary world and of a new nation-spanning as it does two world wars, Independence and Partition, and the building and fraying of the Nehruvian state. Throughout Indian history, various individuals and groups have questioned, censured and debated authority--be it the state or empire, religious or political traditions, caste hierarchies, patriarchy or even the idea of god. These dissenting voices have persisted despite all attempts made to silence them. They have inspired revolutions and uprisings, helped preserve individual dignity and freedom, and promoted tolerance and a plurality in thought and lifestyle. India Dissents: 3,000 Years of Difference, Doubt and Argument brings together some of these voices that have sustained India as a great and vibrant civilization. Collected in these pages are essays, letters, reports, poems, songs and calls to action--from texts ranging from the Rig Veda to Ambedkar's Annihilation of Caste; and by thinkers as varied as the Buddha, Akka Mahadevi, Lal Ded, Nanak, Ghalib, Tagore, Gandhi, Manto, Jayaprakash Narayan, Namdeo Dhasal, Mahasweta Devi and Amartya Sen. Their words embody the undying and essential spirit of dissent in one of the world's most diverse, dynamic and oldest civilizations.

The Caravan

As India enters an election year, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party looks as invincible as the Congress once looked in the first few decades after Independence. Many believe that the only way a regime change can be effected is if political parties in the opposition come together to form a mahagathbandhan, or a grand coalition. As the opposition faces the arduous task of uniting disparate interests and ideologies, there is much they can learn from the story of Ram Manohar Lohia—the first architect of coalition politics in India. Also in this issue: Bela Bhatia on what really happened in the Nulkatong encounter; Hartosh Singh Bal on how caste trumped class in the state elections; Himanshu on why the Modi government is obscuring data on unemployment; Yogendra Yadav on what the Modi government has done to farmers; Gabriele Cecconi on the environmental crisis unfolding in the world’s largest refugee camp; Sara Rai on her journey out of and into language.

"I knew Anant Vijay, but I never imagined that someone in the Hindi literary world could be so well-read. Reading so many books and analyzing them critically is a huge task in itself. I am quite intimidated by Anant Vijay's reading capability and scholarly nature. I was very impressed by his book Vidhayon Ka Vinyas. I must commend his writing style; his language is transparent and concise." -Namvar Singh ★★★ "If anyone in Delhi asks for the name of a person who reads or browses through the newest Hindi and English books, the name that spontaneously comes to my mind is Anant Vijay. Not only does he read, but he also raises unique and untouched questions." -Rajendra Yadav ★★★ "A book that attacks pseudo-intellectualism and the pretense of showy secularism.” -India Today

First, a word about Kiklos. A variant spelling of Greek word Kyklos meaning cycle or circle, it is, in the present context – to quote Nevil Coghill, President, The Poetry Society, which first published the Gavin Bantock poem in question, namely Ichor – the ‘circle-city of person itself.’ This My Body Is Kiklos – a quote from Ichor – retraces Parminder Singh’s journey into the dim and distant past, another inwards. In the course of his journey, he encounters the girl he broke faith with; the wife he couldn’t quite convince of his love; the aged parents he let down; violent death meted out to his cousins in the aftermath of the assassination of the Prime Minister by two Sikh bodyguards. Parminder’s is a journey in quest of the songbird where it nests in a stilled heart.
