Aubrey L. Haines Manuscript
Osborne Russell's journal covers the period, 1834-1843. Aubrey L. Haines, a prolific writer and editor of Western American history, edited the original manuscript diary in the William Robertson Coe Collection of Western Americana in the Yale University Library. He added a bibliography and extensive notes. The collection consists of his typescript manuscript prepared for publication by the Oregon Historical Society in 1955.

Journal of a Trapper
In 1834, Osborne Russell joined an expedition from Boston, under the direction of Nathaniel J. Wyeth, which proceeded to the Rocky Mountains to capitalize on the salmon and fur trade. He would remain there, hunting, trapping, and living off the land, for the next nine years. Journal of a Trapper is his remarkable account of that time as he developed into a seasoned veteran of the mountains and experienced trapper.
