"I've always had difficulty imagining my father as a policeman. He seemed most himself in the informal setting of safari life, clothes disheveled, sometimes not shaving for days. So why did he join the Indian Police, with its rigid hierarchies and complex protocols?" Setting Sun is the story of the dying days of an empire, combined with gripping family history, in an extraordinary literary voyage across India. When a letter from an Indian historian arrives out of the blue, informing leading academic Moore Gilbert that his beloved, deceased father, a member of the Indian Police before Independence, partook in the abuse of civilians, Moore Gilbert's world is shaken as his cherished childhood m...

Archives and Archiving in the 21st Century

Archives intersect with our lives in many ways. We have archives of our own, documenting family memories and histories. Then, there are larger archives that document different aspects of the past — memories, identities, location, time, and space. This volume explores changing notions of the archive in different areas, to trace the ways in which the archives continue to be used in history. This paper sets out to discuss critically a particular controversy regarding the 'madness' of Shivaji IV, the minor Maharaja of Kolhapur, a princely state in Southern part of Bombay Presidency, which took place in early 1880s. The British officials and doctors were of the opinion that Shivaji IV was suffering from an incurable 'madness'. This official version received support from English newspapers like the Times of India and the Bombay Gazette. However, some Indian owned newspapers like Induprakash, Mahratta and Kesari disputed it. In the Kesari there was a public questioning of the diagnosis, treatment and mental state of the Chhatrapati. The Kesari, then under the editorship of Agarkar, ...

Macaulay and Son

Thomas Babington Macaulay's History of England was a phenomenal Victorian best-seller which shaped much more than the literary culture of the times: it defined a nation's sense of self, charting the rise of the British Isles to its triumph as a homogenous nation, a safeguard of the freedom of belief and expression, and a central world power. In this book Catherine Hall explores the emotional, intellectual, and political roots of Thomas Macaulay's vision of England, tracing the influence of his father's career as a colonial governor and drawing illuminating comparisons between the two men.
