The banking system in Europe is large in relation to the economy. It is characterized by universal banking, and driven by a significant number of globally active national champions that are systemically important. Banks perform a vital role for the economy. But their leverage and deposit funding makes them inherently vulnerable to bank runs. Axel Wieandt's role as former CEO of Hypo Real Estate, which he assumed immediately after the Lehman crisis in the fall of 2008, makes him uniquely placed to both examine the causes of the current situation of the European banking system and make suggestions for getting it back on track. His starting point is a comprehensive description of the European banking system and an analysis of the role of banks in the economy. He goes on to examine the root causes and implications of the Great Financial Crisis for the European banking system. He argues for full implementation of Banking Union with greater emphasis on market discipline and accountability.

Managerial Overconfidence: Different Thinking through Different Education

In literature, overconfidence has been blamed for economic bubbles and crises as well as for international conflicts and wars. While education has already been shown to impact one’s level of overconfidence previous research focused on the length and profoundness of education. This study, in contrast, examines the connection between overconfidence and the field in which a person has been educated. The issues covered are therefore how education and mind set are related, why a differentiation between “quantitative” and “qualitative” education makes sense in this context, and how different mind-sets influence an individual’s proneness to overconfidence. Drawing on the dual process concept of reasoning from psychology it is argued that the focus of one’s education may have an influence on individual levels of overconfidence through distinct ways of reasoning that are acquired and practiced during higher education. As support for this theory, data on the overconfidence of CEOs of the largest German companies is used and experiments for future research on this topic are suggested.

Gevorg Hunanyan develops a model that provides a comprehensive theoretical framework to study the consequences of short-sale constraints on the stability of financial markets. This model shows that overpricing of securities is solely attributable to the subjective second moment beliefs of investors. Thus, short-sale constraints prevent a market decline only if investors have low dispersion of beliefs, which in the model is embodied in the covariance matrix. The Interaction between Financial Stability and Financial Institutions: Some Reflections

The contribution of this dissertation is to investigate financial stability issues from three different perspectives, illustrating that financial instability shows different characteristics over time, among financial institutions, and across financial activities. Chapter 1 reviews the normative and positive monetary policy literature on Taylor rules which have been augmented with exchange rates, asset prices, credit or leverage, and spreads. In addition, the chapter compares the development of these indicators for the core and the periphery of the Eurozone from 1999 (with the introduction of the euro) until 2013. Chapter 2 goes on to investigate the funding advantage that is provided to German Landesbanken by the joint liability scheme of the German Savings Banks Finance Group. Chapter 3 investigates peer-to-peer (P2P) lending and shows that the changing role of soft information, online platform default risk, liquidity risk and underdeveloped online secondary markets, and the institutionalization of P2P markets implies larger risks than traditional banking. Moreover, P2P lending can be considered part of the shadow banking sector.
