Human activities have dramatically changed the composition and organisation of soils. Industrial and urban wastes, agricultural application and also mining activities resulted in an increased concentration of heavy metals in soils. How plants and soil microorganisms cope with this situation and the sophisticated techniques developed for survival in contaminated soils is discussed in this volume. The topics presented include: the general role of heavy metals in biological soil systems; the relation of inorganic and organic pollutions; heavy metal, salt tolerance and combined effects with salinity; effects on abuscular mycorrhizal and on saprophytic soil fungi; heavy metal resistance by streptomycetes; trace element determination of environmental samples; the use of microbiological communities as indicators; phytostabilization of lead polluted sites by native plants; effects of soil earthworms on removal of heavy metals and the remediation of heavy metal contaminated tropical land.
In this volume, the contributing authors from top labs involved in stem cell theranostics share the latest advances in the field of stem cell research. The book covers many aspects of stem cell-based therapy and the progress made toward stem cell therapy for liver, ocular, and cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer. This volume serves as a continuation of Prof. Khawaja Husnain Haider’s previously edited books pertaining to stem cells-based therapnostics. This is an ideal book for researchers involved in drug development as well as regenerative medicine and stem cell-based therapy. The secondary audience includes graduate and postgraduate medical students, doctors, cellular pharmacology, drug industry, and researchers involved in using stem cells as ex-vivo disease models for drug development.
Regulatory problems defined as excessive crying, sleeping, or feeding problems, are among the most common concerns of parents with children 0-5 years old. These problems are typically understood within the context of the parent-child relationship, however the complex underlying mechanisms that explain the occurrence and continuation as well as long-term outcomes of regulatory problems are still poorly understood. Despite some promising treatment options, important knowledge gaps remain to be addressed, which will inform evidence-based practice for services of children aged 0-5. With this Research Topic we aim to bring together research from different countries and from multidisciplinary research backgrounds on the topic of regulatory problems and disorders. We particularly encourage research that focuses on observed parent-child interactions in relation to regulatory problems. We view regulatory problems as a transdiagnostic biopsychosocial concept covering excessive crying, sleeping, and/or feeding and eating problems. However, studies with a focus on any of these problems are also encouraged.
Being sick is a normal part of childhood, and being seriously ill is the unfortunate lot of many children. Every child in the United States has some contact with the healthcare system at some time, and it is estimated that one of every two children or adolescents is hospitalized as a result of illness or injury. Being injured, undergoing routine medical procedures, getting sick, or being hospitalized confront children with challenges on many levels--physical, mental, emotional, and social. The premise of this volume is that developmental and psychological factors are central elements in many current problems in child health such as persistent crying in infants, sources of children's injury a...
