Advances in Analytical Features of Electrochemical Methods for the Analysis of Complicated Real Samples

One of the challenges in Analytical chemistry is the analysis of complicated real samples. Analytical methods commonly suffer from interference and several limitations for the analysis of these samples. These limitations may be due to inherent problems of method or the nature of the sample matrix. Although electrochemical methods have several advantages, they are not exempt from this rule. Different parameters should be investigated to improve electrochemical methods for the analysis of real samples, selectivity being the most important. Inherent selectivity of dynamic electrochemical techniques is achieved when the analyte reacts in different values of applied parameters compared to potentially interfering species. In other words, the choice of applied parameter (e.g. potential in voltammetry) determines the selectivity of the measurement.

Molecular Basis of Hematopoiesis

Molecular Basis of Hematopoiesis

Although much is known with respect to blood cell formation and function, many new concepts in the areas of the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell commitment and the subsequent survival, proliferation, and differentiation of progenitors have been elucidated in the last five years. Our understanding of the microenvironment where stem cells reside and commit to distinct blood types (the niche) has grown significantly in recent years. Furthermore, blood cells have been used as the key model system to study microRNA function and the role of microRNAs in the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells. The current volume Molecular Basis of Hematopoiesis, edited by Amittha Wickrema & Barbara Kee, provides the most recent developments in the area in addition to a chapter on the utilization of basic science knowledge for the treatment of blood diseases. Each chapter in this book has been written and edited by faculty in major academic and research institutions around the world, who are pushing the frontiers of research in this important area.

Advanced Coating Materials

Provides a comprehensive, yet practical source of reference, and excellent foundation for comparing the properties and performance of coatings and selecting the most suitable materials based on specific service needs and environmental factors. Coating technology has developed significant techniques for protecting existing infrastructure from corrosion and erosion, maintaining and enhancing the performance of equipment, and provided novel functions such as smart coatings greatly benefiting the medical device, energy, automotive and construction industries. The mechanisms, usage, and manipulation of cutting-edge coating methods are the focus of this book. Not only are the working mechanisms of...

Cell-Penetrating Peptides

Cell-Penetrating Peptides

The definitive reference on the rational design of cell-penetrating peptides enables readers to develop tailor-made peptides for their specific needs. In recent years, cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have become valuable tools for the cellular delivery of proteins, nucleic acids, and drugs. These small peptide sequences can be artificially designed and synthesized with custom-made characteristics to mediate the efficient and non-toxic transport of biomolecules, drugs, or nanoparticles into the cell. Cell-Penetrating Peptides: Design, Development, and Applications provides an up-to-date account of the development and use of CPPs for delivering membrane-impermeable bioactive molecules into ce...

Physiology and Pathology of Chloride Transporters and Channels in the Nervous System

The importance of chloride ions in cell physiology has not been fully recognized until recently, in spite of the fact that chloride (Cl-), together with bicarbonate, is the most abundant free anion in animal cells, and performs or determines fundamental biological functions in all tissues. For many years it was thought that Cl- was distributed in thermodynamic equilibrium across the plasma membrane of most cells. Research carried out during the last couple of decades has led to a dramatic change in this simplistic view. We now know that most animal cells, neurons included, exhibit a non-equilibrium distribution of Cl- across their plasma membranes. Over the last 10 to 15 years, with the grow...

Engineering and Physical Approaches to Cancer

Engineering and Physical Approaches to Cancer addresses the newest research at this interface between cancer biology and the physical sciences. Several chapters address the mechanobiology of collective and individual cell migration, including experimental, theoretical, and computational perspectives. Other chapters consider the crosstalk of biological, chemical, and physical cues in the tumor microenvironment, including the role of senescence, polyploid giant cells, TGF-beta, metabolism, and immune cells. Further, chapters focus on circulating tumor cells and metastatic colonization, highlighting both bioengineered models as well as diagnostic technologies. Further, this book features the wo...
