Henry B. Barker Correspondence
Six letters from Henry Barker to his brother sent from Russia, Chile, at sea while en route to Calif., and San Francisco. He writes of his visits to the Kremlin in Moscow and to St. Petersburg, and then describes life and conditions in Chile, including a recent earthquake and war with Peru, along with his own business ventures. His letter of May 30, 1849 conveys excitement at being among the first in Calif. after the discovery of gold, and includes an addendum dated June 23, 1849, giving his early impressions of San Francisco as an expensive place. Finally, two letters sent by acquaintances from Calif. concern Henry's death from cholera.
