New Developments in Behavioral Research: Theory, Method and Application

Originally published in 1977, these examples of research and scholarly argument were collected in honor of Professor Sidney W. Bijou. In the language of academics, they constitute a Festschrift: a festival of scholarly writing, performed to celebrate the career of a person who produced, and stimulated others to produce, exactly such contributions throughout a long, valuable, and productive professional history. Since 1955, Dr Bijou had worked almost exclusively within the approach variously labelled as the functional analysis of behavior, the experimental analysis of behavior, operant conditioning, or Skinnerian psychology. From his point of view, it seems clear, the first of these labels was the correct one. It was the principle of objective, direct, observable analysis that attracted him.

Training in multicultural issues is an area of increasing focus in medical education internationally. In the United States specifically, the inclusion of the topic in training programs is among the key criteria established by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for approval of schools of medicine, where Standard 7.6 deals with "Structural Competence, Cultural Competence, and Health Inequities." This new textbook provides a culturally sensitive framework to address the major elements in the LCME Standard 7.6 and to address related requirements for including multicultural issues in the curriculums of medical schools around the world. The Power of Reinforcement

2004 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title According to Stephen Ray Flora, reinforcement is a very powerful tool for improving the human condition despite often being dismissed as regarding people as less than human and as "overly simplistic." This book addresses and defends the use of reinforcement principles against a wide variety of attacks. Countering the myths, criticisms, and misrepresentations of reinforcement, including false claims that reinforcement is "rat psychology," the author shows that building reinforcement theory on basic laboratory research is a strength, not a weakness, and allows unlimited applications to human situations as it promotes well-being and productivity. Also examined are reinforcement contingencies, planned or accidental, as they shape behavioral patterns and repertoires in a positive way.
