Single-Molecule Magnets

Concise overview of synthesis and characterization of single molecule magnets Molecular magnetism is explored as an alternative to conventional solid-state magnetism as the basis for ultrahigh-density memory materials with extremely fast processing speeds. In particular single-molecule magnets (SMM) are in the focus of current research, both because of their intrinsic magnetization properties, as well as because of their potential use in molecular spintronic devices. SMMs are fascinating objects on the example of which one can explain many concepts. Single-Molecule Magnets: Molecular Architectures and Building Blocks for Spintronics starts with a general introduction to single-molecule magne...

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance: Volume 27

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) applications remain highly significant in modern analytical science and this volume compiles critical coverage of developments in the recent literature. The topics covered in this volume describe contrasting types of EPR application, including rapid scan EPR, using the EPR toolkit to investigate the structural dynamics of membrane proteins and pulse dipolar EPR spectroscopy for investigating biomolecular binding events. An additional chapter reviewing the PARACAT collaboration from the EU has also been included. Providing a snapshot of the area by a handpicked group of researchers at the cutting-edge of the field, this book is a useful addition to any library supporting this research.

Throughout history, many people have escaped to nature either permanently or temporarily to rest and recharge. Richard L. Proenneke, a modern-day Henry David Thoreau, is no exception. Proenneke built a cabin in Twin Lakes, Alaska in 1968 and began thirty years of personal growth, which he spent growing more connected to the wilderness in which he lived. This guide through Proenneke’s memories follows the journey that began with One Man’s Wilderness, which contains some of Proenneke’s journals. It continues the story and reflections of this mountain man and his time in Alaska. The editor, John Branson, was a longtime friend of Proenneke’s and a park historian. He takes care that Proenneke’s journals from 1974-1980 are kept exactly as the author wrote them. Branson’s footnotes give a background and a new understanding to the reader without detracting from Proenneke’s style. Anyone with an interest in conservation and genuine wilderness narratives will surely enjoy and treasure this book.

Charles Bukowski

“A lively portrait of American literature’s ‘Dirty Old Man’.” —Library Journal A former postman and long-term alcoholic who did not become a full-time writer until middle age, Charles Bukowski was the author of autobiographical novels that captured the low life—including Post Office, Factotum, and Women—and made him a literary celebrity, with a major Hollywood film (Barfly) based on his life. Drawing on new interviews with virtually all of Bukowski’s friends, family, and many lovers; unprecedented access to his private letters and unpublished writing; and commentary from Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, R. Crumb, and Harry Dean...

One Man's Wilderness

"To live in a pristine land, unchanged by man; to roam a wilderness through which few other humans pass; to choose an idyllic site, cut trees and build a log cabin; to be a self-sufficient craftsman, making what is needed from materials available; to be not at odds with thye world, but content with one's own thougts and company. Thousands have had such dreams but Richard Proenneke lived them. He found a place, built a cabin and stayed to become part of the country. [This] is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations and activities he carried out alone and the constant chain of nature's events that kept him company"--Publisher's description.

A Neolithic Cemetery in the Northern Dongola Reach

The excavation report of a Neolithic cemetery (at site R2) on the east back of the Nile, the most detailed to date. Chapters look at the grave goods, including pottery, lithic tools, stone gems, and animal remains used both for tools and ornaments, and at the human skeletal and dental remains. Bio-archaeology provides evidence for the diet and health of the population, whilst grave goods offer evidence of chronology and social complexity. Tentative conclusions about the relative roles of hunting, herding and agriculture are offered.
