Situating Global Art

George Daniel Messing and his family immigrated to Buffalo, New York in 1854, and he died that years. The family moved to Princeton, Wisconsin in 1857 and the oldest son, George (1833-1912), married Mary Ann Eager in 1860 and served in the Civil War.

Im Februar 1860 erkundigt sich ein entfernter Verwandter bei ihm, ob ein Logis zu vergeben wäre, der Wyssler Jakob, ein arbeitsloser Schuhmacher und Taglöhner mit Frau und drei Kindern. Schlatter fasst Vertrauen und geht darauf ein. Aber bald beginnen Schwierigkeiten. Der Mietzins ist überrissen. Wyssler hat die versprochenen Geissen nicht mitgebracht. Schlatter überlässt ihnen nur schlechtes Ackerland. Dauernd argwöhnt er, bestohlen zu werden, da können die hungernden Wysslers ja gleich das eine oder andere nehmen, er hält sie sowieso für Diebe. Geredet wird kaum, und so steigen die Spannungen im Haus bis ins Unerträgliche. Es endet ein Jahr später in Totschlag und öffentlicher Hinrichtung vor Tausenden von Zuschauern. "Keinen Seufzer wert" ist ein eindringlicher Roman über weltverachtenden Glauben, über Engherzigkeit und Selbstgerechtigkeit und nicht zuletzt über die Katastrophe der Sprachlosigkeit.
