Erwin Wurm

- The newest series of works by renowned artist Erwin Wurm - First book about Wurm's ceramic oeuvre Gestural sculptures formed in ceramics are the focus of Erwin Wurm: Dissolution. Wurm's anthropomorphic ceramic sculptures, their forms oscillating between the ephemeral and the physical, are characterized by performative gestures. They affirm the inherent plasticity of the material clay, recalling the potency of bozzetti, in which artists from the Renaissance onwards were able to give direct expression to their innermost creative ideas. In Dissolution (2018-2020), Wurm sets out in search of a creative process that cannot be completely controlled. "Dissolution" has connotations of disintegration, decay, decomposition, and vanishing boundaries. The sculptures -- with their protruding fingers, hands, lips, mouths, breasts, bellies, noses, and ears -- force their way out of a clay mass. Text in English and German.

In his solo exhibition that reflects the MAK Vienna collection, Thomas Bayrle combines traditional craft techniques with the computer-generated art of the Information Age.Using the metaphors of dyeing, weaving, and programming, Bayrle explores the ambivalence of art, craft, and industry and gives rise to kaleidoscopic shapes--Mass Ornaments. He develops his legendary 'superforms' as a reference to cultural and industrial icons like Jesus Christ, Mao, the highway, or the smartphone. He composed the oversize stage set iPhone meets Japan (working title, 2017) for the MAK Columned Main Hall out of iPhones; under the auspices of digital interconnectivity, it oscillates between a couple who briefly...

Based on the art of the Biedermeier period, which is defined by the abstraction of forms, ornament, and colour, Clegg & Guttmann's involvement with the material introduces another level, which reacts to existing, site-specific structures. The artists' specially developed project interprets the ensemble of the Geymüllerschlössel as the backdrop for several trenchant and staged tableaux - expressly lit and set to music as well as the spoken word - of furniture, objects, instruments, and materials from the Biedermeier period. In the course of a theatrical tour, the rooms of the Geymüllerschlössel will be brought to life, revitalizing this summer residence from yesteryear. Exhibition: MAK-Expositur Geymüllerschlössel, Vienna, Austria (25.09.2016-04.12.2016).

Vienna

How can one European capital be responsible for most of the West’s intellectual and cultural achievements in the twentieth century? Viennese ideas saturate the modern world. From California architecture to Hollywood Westerns, modern advertising to shopping malls, orgasms to gender confirmation surgery, nuclear fission to fitted kitchens—every aspect of our history, science, and culture is in some way shaped by Vienna. The city of Freud, Wittgenstein, Mahler, and Klimt was the melting pot at the heart of a vast metropolitan empire. But with the Second World War and the rise of fascism, the dazzling coteries of thinkers who squabbled, debated, and called Vienna home dispersed across the world, where their ideas continued to have profound impact. Richard Cockett gives us the entirety of this extraordinary story. Tracing Vienna’s rich intellectual history from psychoanalysis to Reaganomics, Cockett encompasses everything from the communist rebels of Red Vienna to the neoliberal economists of the Austrian School. This is the panoramic account of how one city made the modern world—and how we all remain inescapably Viennese.

The iconic design classics that are still handcrafted today by the Auböck workshop, now in its fourth generation in Vienna, were ahead of their time from the very beginning and shaped Austrian design across generations. The book and exhibition focus on the style-defining era of the interwar and post-war period and also refer to the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented. The book contains, among other things, newly produced photographs of the essential, original works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein, texts by Kimberly Bradley on the workshop in the international design context, Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop and Bärbel Vischer on the surrealist perspective on the comprehensive oeuvre of the Auböck workshop.
