In 1984 the OK Tedi Mining Company Limited began mining copper and gold mineralization from Mt. Fubilan, which is located at the headwaters of the OK Tedi. Subsequent mining in the region followed in 1990. Since this time there has been intense monitoring of the environment undertaken by those in the field in order to better understand the possible impact of mining. This book assembles and summarizes research spanning two decades undertaken by leading experts with firsthand experience. Much of this research is contained in internal company reports, giving the reader rare insight and firsthand knowledge. - Documents physical and biologic change in a large tropical river system brought about largely by mining in an otherwise pristine environment - This book brings together a broad rand of disciplines to provide a comprehensive overview of change in a complex and dynamical tropical river system based largely on previously unpublished company reports - The book provides examples of state-of-the-art strategies and methodologies for monitoring environmental impact in a large river system

Tight Junctions in Cancer Metastasis

There has been a dramatic increase in knowledge of tight junctions in the past decade. The molecular structure of tight junctions, cellular functions and the pathophysiological roles of tight junctions are becoming clear. Of the most important functions, the role of the cellular structure in cancer spread and drug delivery are increasingly realised. It is now clear that there are fundamental changes to tight junctions during the process of cancer development. Tight junctions are also critical to the metastatic process of cancer cells. The cellular structure is also crucial in drug therapies, namely, the permeability and bioavailability of the drugs, penetration of barriers such as the blood brain barrier. This current volume aims to summarise the current knowledge of tight junctions, their role in cancer and cancer metastasis and is of interest to scientists and clinicians.

A.C. Greene considered The Comanche Barrier to South Plains Settlement an instant choice to be included in his book, The Fifty Best Books on Texas. The book details both sides of the tragic Council House Fight of 1840, the Battle of Adobe Walls, and the reluctance of the Comanches to accept Texas overtures to peace. Originally published in 1933, this edition includes 11,000 words that were left out of the original version. The author tells the story of one of the most feared Indian tribes from both the perspective of the Native Americans and the Whites. This book shows the history was not one-sided, and both share responsibility for the hostility and deaths that resulted. Of particular interest is the chapter on the famous Adobe Walls battle. It tells the story from the Comanche side of the battle and explains the fascinating background, especially the role of Isatai, the young Comanche medicine man and prophet who, convincing the leaders of his magic and visions, created the one final effort on the part of several tribes to reclaim their buffalo hunting grounds.
