Die Aufsätze des Sammelbandes untersuchen die Frage, ob das für Deutschland geltende Konzept einer "Generation Ebert", also einer zweiten Generation von Arbeiterführern, die sich von den Parteigründern in Herkunft, Denken und Handeln abgrenzen lässt, auf die europäische Ebene übertragen werden kann. Damit wird ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Erforschung des Demokratisierungsprozesses nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg geleistet, den diese Generation von Sozialdemokraten, aus der Systemopposition kommend, nun als politisch Verantwortliche entscheidend mitgestaltete. Insgesamt zeigen die Beiträge, dass eine generationelle Perspektive auf die Geschichte der Arbeiterbewegung in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. und der ersten Hälfte des 20.
