The Huguenot Population of France, 1600-1685
This vol. has been built upon all of the known parish register & census evidence bearing upon the changing size of France's Huguenot population over the course of the period between the Edict of Nantes & its Revocation -- specifically, upon census figures or annual totals of baptisms for any Protestant church or community for which such evidence spans 40 or more years of the cent. This national investigation is offered in the hope that it can help to stimulate more of the detailed local studies of individual Protestant communities & of the relations between their members & their Catholic neighbors that are needed to illuminate these variations, as well as to highlight those regions where such studies might be particularly fruitful. The Life of Property
Longstanding and resilient local ideas of property and practices of inheritance control the destinies of those living in Bearn, a region of south-west France in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. Based on extensive fieldwork and archival research that combines ethnography and intellectual history, this book explores these long-term continuities of a particular way of life within a broad framework. These local ideas have found expression twice at the national level: first, in sociological arguments proposed by Frederique Le Play about the family that shaped debates on social reform and the repair of national identity in the last third of the nineteenth century-debates that would play a part in subsequent European thought and in contemporary European social policy. Second, they fed into late twentieth-century sociological categories through the influential work of Pierre Bourdieu. This study of Bearn illustrates the multi-layered life of local concepts and practices, and the continuing contribution of the local to modern European national history.

Calvinism in Europe, 1540-1620
Calvinism was the most dynamic and disruptive religious force of the later sixteenth century. Its emergence on the international scene shattered the precarious equilibrium established in the first generation of the Reformation, and precipitated three generations of religious warfare. This collection of essays probes different aspects of this complex phenomenon at a local level. Contributors present the results of their detailed work on societies as diverse as France, Germany, Highland Scotland and Hungary. Among wider themes approached are the impact of Calvin's writings, Calvinism in higher education, the contrasting fates of reformed preachers in town and country, Calvinist discipline and apocalyptic thought, and the shadowy affinity of merchants and scholars who formed a critical part of the 'Calvinist International'.
