Max Alioth

The first book on the Basel-based Swiss architect Max Alioth. Basel-born architect Max Alioth (1930-2010) was a prominent figure in the Swiss architecture and culture scene. Alioth was a cofounder of Basels' Architecture Museum in 1984, which in 2006 became the Swiss Architecture Museum (SAM). Together with his wife Susanna Biedermann, he founded the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels (ÉSAV) in Marrakech, Morocco, for which he also designed the main campus building. This first book on Max Alioth illuminates his achievements from various perspectives. Selected architectural designs from 1961 to 2007 are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and texts. These include single-family homes, a retirement home, multi-unit housing, Basel's Museum of Antiquities, as well as the ÉSAV building in Marrakech. Moreover, the book introduces Alioth as a visual artist through reproductions of sketches, drawings, and watercolors. Essays by architect Roger Diener, the S AM's director Andreas Ruby, the director of ÉSAV Vincent Melilli, and art historian and publicist Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus round out this volume.

This interdisciplinary volume explores, analyzes, and celebrates intermedial processes. It investigates the dynamic relations between media in contemporary artistic productions such as digitalized poetry and installations or musical scores by Walter Steffens and Hugh Davies; in texts like Dieter Roth’s diaries, Ror Wolf’s guidebooks, Charles Baudelaire’s art criticism, or Lewis Carroll’s Alice books; and in inherently intermedial pieces like Stéphane Mallarmé’s Un Coup de Dés and Augusto de Campos’s poetry. Through distinct and diverse methodological approaches to intermedial inquiry, the contributors probe multiple forms of interaction between media: adaptation, appropriation...

"Art polymath extraordinaire, Dieter Roth (1930-1998) maintained throughout his career an output so prodigious and various that art historians and fans are still struggling to keep up. Bringing innovations to media such as installation, sculpture, artist's books, jewelry and writing, Roth also traveled and collaborated extensively, becoming one of the postwar art scene's most visible personalities. Roth kept a close circle of artist friends with whom he collaborated, and to whom he made regular gifts of works that he named "Souvenirs." These friends included Richard Hamilton, Dorothy Iannone, Hansjörg Mayer, Martin Suter and Jan Voss, and the gifts included works of mail art, which Roth would gleefully subject to the vicissitudes of the postal system ("Has it arrived yet?" Voss recalls Roth asking him, of one such gift; "Has it already been nicely destroyed?"). Dieter Roth: Souvenirs is the first presentation of these works."--Publisher description.

"The Global System for Mobile Communication met with wide acceptance in 1993. Its technical conception has significant advantages over the first generation of cellular systems. Digital European Cordless Telecommunications will provide similar advantages. In Europe, the second generation of wireless communication is established and a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System is currently being conceived. All this leads to a natural subdivision of current research into four categories: new and improved usage of existing standards, signal processing algorithms that are simpler or closer to the optimum, forther development of existing systems, and work that will ultimately lead to new system proposals. This volume presents the proceedings of a seminar at which all these categories were covered."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.

Dieter Roth not only made a significant contribution to the art history of the 20th century with his radical use of organic materials, but was also active as a writer. This charming and personal book offers an intimate view of the artist, who died in 1998. In addition to the foreword by Björn Roth, Dieter Roth's son, it features numerous previously unpublished photos and documents from the artist's long friendship with graphic designer Beat Keusch and painter Erika Streit. In four episodes, the book introduces us to Dieter Roth's most important works and favorite places: from the Schimmelmuseum in Hamburg, the Roth-Raum in Basel, to Iceland and the Basel restaurant Chez Donati - unique insights into the life and work of the great artist. DIETER ROTH (1930-1998) made transience tangible in his art. Since the 1960s, he created works from chocolate and wrote concrete poetry. Roth participated several times in the documenta in Kassel and designed the Swiss pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia in 1982. Born in Hanover, he lived in Austria, Iceland, the USA and Switzerland.
