Dialectology meets Typology

In what ways can dialectologists and language typologists profit from each others' work when looking across the fence? This is the guiding question of this volume, which involves follow-up questions such as: How can dialectologists profit from adopting the large body of insights in and hypotheses on language variation and language universals familiar from work in language typology, notably functional typology? Vice versa, what can typologists learn from the study of non-standard varieties? What are possible contributions of dialectology to areal typologies and the study of grammaticalization? What are important theoretical and methodological implications of this new type of collaboration in the study of language variation? The 18 contributors, among them many distinguished dialectologists, sociolinguists and typologists, address these and other novel questions on the basis of analyses of the morphology and syntax of a broad range of dialects (Germanic, Romance, Balto-Slavic, Indo-Aryan).

Blacksmiths of Ilamba

This study analyzes the establishment of an iron foundry in the interior 18th-century of Angola. It was a fruit of the Portuguese Enlightenment, which encouraged investment in manufacturing, particularly of iron, a metal indispensable for military and technological purposes. However, the plans faced the resistance of African blacksmiths and founders who refused to learn foreign techniques and work processes. By emphasizing Central African agency, the book highlights the successful strategies of historical actors who scholars have largely ignored. Based upon a wide variety of sources from Brazilian, Portuguese, and Angolan archives, the book reconstructs how Africans were taken to work at the...

Research Partnerships for Common Concerns

" Agenda 21 indicates the work that research policy makers, funding organisations and researchers themselves need to do in order to achieve sustainable development in both North and South. Research on sustainability in the 21st century requires us to go beyond purely offer-driven research collaboration. Balanced partnerships and common agenda setting are of crucial importance. All attempts have to start where the Southern partners are and not when the North wants - or expects - them to be. However, a shift in the agenda setting is an issue which does not only concern the North. A fundamental change in prevailing attitudes is also needed in the South: governments have to set priorities at the policy level and to create appropriate frameworks which allow for the development of a self-confident research system. Daniel Maselli is Executive Secretary of the Swiss Commission for Research Partnership with Developing Countries (KFPE). Beat Scottas is a Research Coordinator and Lecturer at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Berne. "

The Languages and Linguistics of Africa

The Languages and Linguistics of Africa

This innovative handbook takes a fresh look at the currently underestimated linguistic diversity of Africa, the continent with the largest number of languages in the world. It covers the major domains of linguistics, offering both a representative picture of Africa’s linguistic landscape as well as new and at times unconventional perspectives. The focus is not so much on exhaustiveness as on the fruitful relationship between African and general linguistics and the contributions the two domains can make to each other. This volume is thus intended for readers with a specific interest in African languages and also for students and scholars within the greater discipline of linguistics.
