Benjamin Hertwig is a National Magazine Award winning writer, painter, and ceramist. He has spent time as a soldier, a student, a bike courier, a treeplanter, an inner-city housing worker, and an English instructor. His first book of poetry, Slow War, was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Awards. Benjamin lives in Edmonton, where he owns a secondhand bookstore, Paper Birch Books, with his partner.

Teaching and learning are profoundly personal experiences, yet systems of education often prioritize disembodied and decontextualized approaches that continue the historical marginalization of the lives they seek to represent. Re/centring teachers and learners places individuals at the heart of education and, in so doing, re/positions knowledge as contextual and constructivist.
