Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden's Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Concerning Buildings has been prepared in honour of Sir Bernard Feilden CBE, a leading and outstanding practitioner in the field of the conservation and repair of historic buildings for forty years or more, having originally studied architecture as a mature student at the Architectural Association after the Second World War (he was born in 1919). The book was not, however, intended to be about him, except for a warm tribute written by Professor Patrick Nuttgens and a full bibliography of his works compiled by Keith Parker: its purpose, rather, is to cover a co-ordinated and wide range of conservation issues, theoretical and practical, and to be regarded as a reference work for our position and our achievements in the art of conservation today. The book contains a wealth of interest and a mine of information for all who are concerned about the present state and approaches to the conservation of buildings in all parts of the world. It will be especially useful to those who teach, those who want to learn, those who own and manage old buildings, and those whose job it is to look after them.

This handbook addresses three areas of concern for the museum administrator concerning the protection of historic buildings, monuments, and archaeological sites located in seismic areas. It proposes pre-disaster measures such as taking accurate and complete documentation (photogrammetry is discussed in one of the 13 appendixes), risk awareness, planning, maintenance and inspections, etc. Second, when an earthquake strikes, the immediate emergency steps necessary to protect life and property are indicated; and after the earthquake, the strengthening of valuable cultural property (based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, also in an appendix) should be included in the general program of prevention maintenance along with the repairs discussed in detail applicable to each architectural element, and to the site as a whole.
