The Capabilities Approach, as pioneered by Martha C. Nussbaum and others, elevates the enabling of free self-development to a criterion of social justice. In recent years, it has become a widely accepted paradigm in Western development policies, and, currently, it is discussed to which extent this normative framework can be applied to other social areas. This volume presents interdisciplinary papers resulting from discussions that young scholars of different disciplines had with Martha C. Nussbaum during the Unseld Lecture 2010 at the Forum Scientiarum of TÃ?1⁄4bingen University. This book is open access under a CCBY license. This book investigates child poverty from a philosophical perspective. It identifies the injustices of child poverty, relates them to the well-being of children, and discusses who has a moral responsibility to secure social justice for children.
The volume relates the Capabilities Approach to research and practice in education, welfare economics and social policy. Thus, it challenges traditional objectives and approaches in these fields. The authors suggest a capabilities perspective that calls into question the metric of success of these disciplines and in the fields of politics. It moves the attention away from economic growth and human capital towards autonomy and “agency freedom” of (young) individuals. Especially with respect to the young this implies a substantial shift of perspectives. Young persons have been particularly highlighted in the political debate: on the one hand side they are one of the groups with the highest...
A sense of participation and opportunities to share and participate in activities or groups that are important to them are crucial factors in human wellbeing. This book provides a robust empirical and theoretical analysis of reciprocity and its implications for social work and social policy practices by discussing how ideas of reciprocity can be understood and applied to welfare policy and social care practices, as well as how the act of reciprocity supports the wellbeing of citizens. Contributions from Finland, Germany, Russia, the UK, the USA and Canada illuminate the ways in which socio-political contexts influence the power relations between citizens, practitioners and the state, and the potential (or otherwise) for reciprocity to flourish. It will be essential reading for social care practitioners, researchers and educationalists as well as postgraduate students in social work and related social care and community-oriented professions and social policy makers.
For many years, government policy has associated young people 'being NEET' (Not in Education, Employment or Training) with educational underachievement, worklessness, generational poverty, poor health, antisocial behaviour, and reduced life expectancies. Researchers and policymakers continue to debate whether young people become NEET as a result of their own choices (i.e. their personal agency), or as a result of external factors (i.e. social, political and economic structures). Most recognise that the truth is somewhere between the two, but a clear understanding of how each interacts in causing young people to become NEET has so far been elusive, making the development of effective policy a...
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. Childhood is not merely a simple developmental stage prior to adulthood but rather a complex, changeable concept that is of interest and debated by international scholars from diverse disciplinary fields. One emerging debate is the perceived conflicts in childhood. Some of these are from adults representations of children, for example in literature, law and education to the practical and relational conflicts children experience at school and at home between peers, siblings and others. This volume presents a collection of these conflicts in childhood from interdisciplinary perspectives. Consideration is given to children’s rights and freedom, childhood relationships, gender, children’s representation in media and policies and politics about children.
