Patrons of the Old Faith
Patrons of the Old Faith is the first full-length study on the Catholic nobility in the Dutch Republic. Based on a detailed prosopographical analysis and through the examination of their marriage strategies, interaction with Protestants, religiosity and contributions to the Holland Mission, Jaap Geraerts shows how the behaviour of the Catholic nobility was highly distinctive and differed from their co-religionists and Protestant peers as it was influenced by a specific set of noble and Catholic values. Due to the synthesis of their noble and confessional identities, the Dutch Catholic nobility in Utrecht and Guelders acted as patrons of their faith and were instrumental for the survival of Catholicism in the Dutch Republic.
De Caeskopers
Koopman Claas Caeskoper in Koog aan de Zaan begon in 1669 als achttienjarige een dagjournaal bij te houden. Hij hield dat zestig jaar lang vol, tot tien dagen voor zijn dood. Het journaal bevat een schat aan aantekeningen over het dagelijkse leven in de Zaanstreek en bovendien schreef Caeskoper met graagte over zijn avontuurlijke ondernemingen, zoals tripjes naar het oorlogstoneel in het Rampjaar 1672 en schaatstochten, waaronder een van bijna 300 km. Over zijn bezigheden als koopman schreef hij minder, maar daarover bleek veel te achterhalen in de nagelaten papieren van zijn broer Gerrit. De combinatie van deze familiedocumenten met ander eigentijds materiaal heeft een levendig portret opgeleverd van een familie in het hart van de Zaanse bedrijvigheid in de Gouden Eeuw. De negotie van Claas Caeskoper is later uitgebouwd tot het levensmiddelenconcern Honig. Ook die toedracht wordt in het boek verhaald.
