This volume includes fourteen essays by eminent sociologists in memory of Ramkrishna Mukherjee (1919–2017), the last of the founding architects of sociology in India. It also includes two interviews with Ramkrishna Mukherjee by senior sociologists. The essays cover a variety of themes and topics close to the works of Ramkrishna Mukherjee: the idea of unitary social science, methodology of social research, the question of facts and values, rural society and social change, social mobility, family and gender, and nationalism. In the two interviews included here Mukherjee clarifies his intellectual trajectory as well as issues of methodology and methods in social research. Overall, this volume endorses his emphasis on the need for social researchers to transcend the ‘what’ and ‘how’ to ‘why’ in the pursuit of sociological knowledge. The volume is a valuable addition to the history of sociology in India. Students of sociology and other social sciences will find it useful as a book of substantive readings on social dynamics; those researching the social world will find in it a useful guide to issues in designing and execution of social research projects.

Global social transformation calls for global social action. 2010 saw the launch of The Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development, which detailed how social workers can strive to bring about increased social justice. The time is right to start to address and demonstrate the actions that might be required to develop and accomplish the Agenda - with regard to methods in practice and research, in social policy and social work education, and in a broader discourse of global commitment and cooperation. This informative and incisively written edited collection brings together experts from around the world to discuss issues which the social work and social welfare sectors face every day and to ensure a closer link between evidence-based practice, policy objectives and social development goals. Furthermore, this book reveals how these may affect the conditions of people and demonstrate how the social work and social development community can contribute to sustainable development.

Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) has been recognised as a one of the important pre-conditions to socio-economic and political developments of any society; particularly it is so in a developing society. The Government of India, recognising UEE as a goal of national importance has been putting every effort to achieve it. The provisions contained in the Article 45 of the Constitution of India insist on providing Free and Compulsory Elementary Education to all children. It may be observed however, that the present understanding of compulsory education is limited to compulsory schooling with physical enrollment of the child instead of facilitating the child to develop his/her academic interests.

Cookstove Chronicles

Cookstove Chronicles examines India's handcrafted, wood-burning cooking stoves, the rural women who use them, and outsiders who try to improve them by engineering a range of "clean" cooking devices. Khandelwal adopts a transnational feminist, anthropological, and STS perspective to reimagine the humble mud stove as both villain and hero of this story and to suggest pathways for collaboration across radical disciplinary divides.
