Recueil de sept nouvelles qui se déroulent en Indochine à la fin du XIXe siècle, Fumeurs d’Opium est un authentique chef-d’œuvre et certainement l’une des meilleures illustrations littéraires des terribles génies de la «pâte noire», tour à tour fantastique, effroyable, halluciné ou alors totalement apaisé. Dans la tradition d’un de Quincey ou d’un Baudelaire, Jules Boissière décrit les effets de l’opium sur celui qui s’y adonne. Mais là où ces deux auteurs se limitent à leurs propres expériences ou celles de leurs amis proches, l’auteur peint un tableau de la société tout entière, représentée côté indigène par le lettré classique et côté colonisateur par le soldat français. Pour les deux, l’opium est la panacée pour atteindre la sagesse, la sérénité par l’effacement des limites entre le Bien et le Mal, l’impassibilité même devant la mort, la compassion mutuelle qui peut unir d’anciens ennemis...
