Actor-Network Theory at the Movies
This book is one of the first to apply the theoretical tools proposed by French philosopher Bruno Latour to film studies. Through the example of the Hollywood Teen Film and with a particular focus on Actor-Network Theory (ANT), the book delineates how Teen Film has established itself as one of Hollywood’s most consistent and dynamic genres. While many productions may recycle formulaic patterns, there is also a proliferation of cinematic coming-of-age narratives that are aesthetically and politically progressive, experimental, and complex. The case studies develop a Latourian film semiotics as a flexible analytical approach which raises new questions, not only about the history, types and tropes of teen films, but also about their aesthetics, mediality, and composition. Through an exploration of a wide and diverse range of examples from the past decade, including films by female and African-American directors, urban and rural perspectives, and non-heteronormative sexualities, Actor-Network Theory at the Movies demonstrates how the classic Teen Film canon has been regurgitated, expanded, and renewed.
The Politics of Serial Television Fiction
Fictional TV politics played a pivotal role in the popular imaginaries of the 2010s across cultures. Examining this curious phenomenon, Sebastian Naumann provides a wide-ranging analysis of the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary polit-series. Proposing a novel structural model of serial television, he offers an innovative methodological framework for comparative textual analysis that integrates sociocultural, economic, sociotechnical, narratological, and aesthetic perspectives. This study furthermore explores how the changing affordances of (nonlinear) television impact serial storytelling and identifies key narrative trends and recurring themes in contemporary TV polit-fiction.
Stylistics, Stylometry and Sentiment Analysis in German Studies
Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe’s “late style”, Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg’s “twitterature” and Daniel Glattauer’s e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.
Palimpsests in Ethnic and Postcolonial Literature and Culture
This volume explores ways in which the literary trope of the palimpsest can be applied to ethnic and postcolonial literary and cultural studies. Based on contemporary theories of the palimpsest, the innovative chapters reveal hidden histories and uncover relationships across disciplines and seemingly unconnected texts. The contributors focus on diverse forms of the palimpsest: the incarceration of Native Americans in military forts and their response to the elimination of their cultures; mnemonic novels that rework the politics and poetics of the Black Atlantic; the urban palimpsests of Rio de Janeiro, Marseille, Johannesburg, and Los Angeles that reveal layers of humanity with disparities in origin, class, religion, and chronology; and the palimpsestic configurations of mythologies and religions that resist strict cultural distinctions and argue against cultural relativism.

Unbound Queer Time in Literature, Cinema, and Video Games investigates the potential of queer conceptions of time to unbind forms of understanding identities. In doing so, it recognizes the power of time to determine us but chooses to queer time and turn it into an ally of unbound forms of understanding identities. Through the analysis of different media—literature, cinema, and video games—the chapters revolve around three key ideas: that there are inherently queer styles of using and dealing with time and temporality in culture; that the critical rediscovery of canonical texts and the analysis of largely ignored queer texts and authors allow for a better understanding of queer identities; and, finally, that normative conceptions of time can—and should—be challenged through critical tools that reconceptualize notions of the self around time.
