Bones of My Grandfather

“War, reclamation, and what Tim O'Brien called "the Lives of the Dead" are eternal literary themes for men. Clay Bonnyman Evans has honored that lineage with this masterful melding of military history and personal quest.”—Ron Powers, co-author of New York Times #1 bestsellers Flags of Our Fathers and True Compass, along with No One Cares About Crazy People and others In November 1943, Marine 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman, Jr. was mortally wounded while leading a successful assault on a critical Japanese fortification on the Pacific atoll of Tarawa, and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor. The brutal, bloody 76-hour battle would ultimately claim the...

Third Duke of Buccleuch and Adam Smith

The third duke of Buccleuch (17461812) presided over the management of one of Britain's largest landed estates during a period of profound agrarian, social and political change. Tutored by the philosopher Adam Smith, the duke was also a leading patron of the Scottish Enlightenment, lauded by the Edinburgh literati as an exemplar of patriotic nobility and civic virtue, while his alliance with Henry Dundas dominated Scottish politics for almost 40 years. Combining the approaches of intellectual, economic and agrarian history, this book examines the life and career of the third duke, focusing in particular on his relationship with Adam Smith and the improvement of his vast Border estates, assessing the influence of Enlightenment thought on agricultural revolution. In its exploration of the cultural as well as the economic roots of Improvement and in its assessment of a previously unappreciated aspect of Smith's career, this book has appeal for both specialist scholars and general readers interested in the Scottish Enlightenment and the culture of Improvement in 18th-century Scotland.

In this report the Competition Commission (CC) formally clears the anticipated acquisition by Ratcliff Palfinger Limited of the commercial vehicles tail lifts spare parts business of Ross & Bonnyman Limited. The CC first examined whether Ross & Bonnyman's decision to wind down its tail lift business was in any way influenced by the agreement to sell its associated spare parts business. It concluded that that was not the case-Ross & Bonnyman had decided to exit tail lift manufacturing some time before entering into discussions with Ratcliff Palfinger, and had already stopped manufacturing even though the merger had not been completed. Consequently the CC looked only at whether the acquisition would affect competition in the spare parts market. It concluded that there was no significant effect because competition between suppliers of spare parts for different makes of tail lift was already extremely limited, as most spare parts are designed specifically to fit one make of tail lift.
