Charting the Course of Psalms Research
Erhard Gerstenberger (1932-2023) has been a highly influential exegete of the Psalms for several decades. He demonstrated how the Psalms were able to modulate the deepest feelings of individuals and communities, encompassing a wide variety of existential experiences relating to God and the world. Gerstenberger believed that psalmic poetry grew out of diverse and real-life situations. The first two essays in Charting the Course of Psalms Research deftly review the secondary literature. The first covers the 'lyrical literature' of the Old Testament, and the second considers the history of interpretation of the Psalms. The Oxford Handbook of Ethiopian Languages
This handbook provides a comprehensive account of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, exploring both their structures and features and their function and use in society. The first part of the volume provides background and general information relating to Ethiopian languages, including their demographic distribution and classification, language policy, scripts and writing, and language endangerment. Subsequent parts are dedicated to the four major language families in Ethiopia - Cushitic, Ethiosemitic, Nilo-Saharan, and Omotic - and contain studies of individual languages, with an initial introductory overview chapter in each part. This book provides a handlist of the Islamic codices hosted in the library of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the University of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Theirs is one of the most important collections of Islamic manuscripts in the horn of Africa. Almost totally unexplored, the collection contains many valuable examples of the rich and variegated manuscript tradition of the Ethiopian Muslims. Each entry describes the main physical features and the most important texts contained in the codex. The catalogue includes a detailed analysis of a selection of watermarked papers and bindings--richly illustrated with pictures from the manuscripts. An extensive appendix contains over eighty plates of paleographical samples of dated manuscripts. Several indices (titles of the works, personal and place names, etc.) facilitate the usage of the handlist for further research.
