Suspended precariously in the middle of this epic struggle is freedom itself. Yet only one God can prevail: either the creator of a new future envisioned by an enslaved people and their Northern allies, or the lord of a dark past to which white Southerners are fiercely devoted. For Baptists, the dividing line runs right through the Bible. Southern biblical conservatism is firmly rooted in America's racist past, while a future of racial equality hinges upon a newer understanding of Accoscriptural interpretation unfettered by the chains of biblical literalism.
To Gallatin County they came, entrepreneurs and immigrant families alike, lured by new opportunities and abundant land west of Bozeman. Belgrade emerged along the railway in the 1880s, named after the Serbian hometown of some of the railroad's European investors. Further to the west, fertile cropland beckoned. An early settlement morphed into Manhattan, a company town of the Manhattan Malting Company. The business purchased land upon which to grow barley and recruited Hollanders to the area. Soon, a Holland Settlement developed amidst prime farmland south of Manhattan, comprised of the communities of Amsterdam and Churchill. Belgrade emerged as a small business hub, while Manhattan, Amsterdam, and Churchill remained largely Dutch agricultural communities.
Southern Baptists have a unique and colorful story. Birthed in the time of slavery controversy, their theology on this and human rights issues has changed as cultural and societal developments occurred. One thing that never changed, however, was their zeal for evangelism. They eventually grew to become the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. Later, a major controversy in the late twentieth century pitted conservative Baptists against moderates. Both sides, however, wrote histories of the controversy from their own perspectives. These histories were significant for understanding how each side interpreted the events. These pages attempt to fill a missing gap. Readers will hear the Southern Baptist story from both sides. Understand from this how Southern Baptists work, think, grow, argue, and have changed over time. They have weathered the ups and downs of history to reveal an ever-growing heritage.
Writing, publishing, and marketing five politically engaged novels that appeared between 1899 and 1908, Sutton E. Griggs (1872-1933) was among the most prolific African American authors at the turn of the twentieth century. In contrast to his Northern contemporaries Paul Laurence Dunbar and Charles Chesnutt, Griggs, as W. E. B. Du Bois remarked, "spoke primarily to the Negro race," using his own Nashville-based publishing company to produce four of his novels. Griggs pastored Baptist churches in three Southern states and played a leading role in the influential but understudied National Baptist Convention. Until recently, little was known about the personal and professional life of this reli...

This Baptist history textbook highlights the diversity of the Baptist movement in North America as it has developed over the past few centuries. Under the Baptist tent are such diverse groups as Primitive Baptists, Freewill Baptists, Seventh-Day Baptists, American Baptists, Southern Baptists, North American Baptists, and Independent Baptists. Each of these Baptists groups shares some basic Baptist principles. However, there are significant theological and social differences between them. This book is the ideal survey for undergraduate-level students.

"This well-researched volume explores how the Black freedom struggle and the anti-Vietnam War movement dovetailed with faculty and student activism in the South to undermine the traditional role of higher education and bring about social change. It offers a deep understanding of the vital importance of independent institutions during times of national crisis" --
