Estudos Aplicados de Direito Empresarial - Societário 1 ed.

  • Categories: Law

The Mystery of Samba

The Mystery of Samba

Samba is Brazil's "national rhythm," the foremost symbol of its culture and nationhood. To the outsider, samba and the famous pre-Lenten carnival of which it is the centerpiece seem to showcase the country's African heritage. Within Brazil, however, samba symbolizes the racial and cultural mixture that, since the 1930s, most Brazilians have come to believe defines their unique national identity. But how did Brazil become "the Kingdom of Samba" only a few decades after abolishing slavery in 1888? Typically, samba is represented as having changed spontaneously, mysteriously, from a "repressed" music of the marginal and impoverished to a national symbol cherished by all Brazilians. Here, however, Hermano Vianna shows that the nationalization of samba actually rested on a long history of relations between different social groups--poor and rich, weak and powerful--often working at cross-purposes to one another. A fascinating exploration of the "invention of tradition," The Mystery of Samba is an excellent introduction to Brazil's ongoing conversation on race, popular culture, and national identity.

An Introduction to Two Theories of Social Anthropology

Louis Dumont, who died in 1998, was one of the most important figures in post-war French anthropology. He is well-known for his early work on India, which culminated in Homo Hierarchicus (1966; in English 1972, 1980), an anthropological account of the caste system. He later extended this work into a comparison of the values of Indian and western society in works like Essays on Individualism (1986) and German ideology: From France to Germany and Back (1994). He is also known for pioneering work on kinship in south India and more generally (for example Affinity as a Value, 1983). The current volume represents the fruits of this side of his activities and originated in as a series of lectures providing an account of the British and French schools for students.

Dangerous Liaisons provides a platform for the leading minds of both communities - including thinkers who straddle both worlds - to debate the volatile subject of the relationship between African Americans and homosexuals. It includes writing on minority relations by well-known historians, political analysts, activists, writers, and philosophers. They address such timely issues as recent high-profile hate crimes against blacks and gays: racism in gay and lesbian rights organizations; homophobia in the black church; the shift in highest rate-of-infection of HIV from the gay community to the black community; and stereotypes in books and films.
